Relay Testing Engineer
Description
We are seeking an experienced relay testing engineer with strong expertise in protection relay configuration, testing, and commissioning, particularly within SIPROTEC 4 and SIPROTEC 5 relay systems. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in ensuring reliable protection schemes through relay configuration, testing, and fault analysis in power systems.
Requirements
Relay configuration & parameterization
Configure and parameterize SIPROTEC 5 protection relays using DIGSI5 engineering software. Perform hardware configuration, protection function settings, and CFC logic programming. Implement and manage IEC 61850 communication settings.
Relay testing & commissioning
Conduct relay protection testing using DIGSI5 testing tools and integrated test sequencer. Perform functional testing for protection schemes including:
- Overcurrent (OC)
- Earth fault (EF)
- Distance protection
- Differential protection
- Power swing blocking
- Switch-on-to-fault (SOTF)
IEC 61850 & communication configuration
Configure and validate GOOSE messaging and MMS communication. Prepare and manage SCL files (ICD, CID, SCD). Coordinate with SCADA teams to validate communication interfaces.
Fault analysis & diagnostics
Extract and analyze fault records, trip logs, and disturbance waveforms. Use SIGRA software for disturbance analysis and protection performance evaluation.
Documentation & reporting
Prepare relay configuration files, protection setting sheets, test reports, and commissioning documentation. Maintain accurate technical records and ensure compliance with project and operational standards.
Technical skills
Strong expertise in DIGSI5 engineering software. Hands-on experience with SIPROTEC 4 and SIPROTEC 5 relay families. Familiarity with relay testing equipment such as OMICRON or Megger test sets. Solid understanding of power system protection principles including:
- Overcurrent protection
- Earth fault protection
- Distance protection
- Differential protection
Educational requirements
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering / power engineering. 10–12 years of experience in protection relay testing, configuration, and commissioning within power systems or substations.
