Release Engineer

Open 47d
The Release Engineer / Technical Release Manager is the technical coordination point that turns completed engineering work into reliable, repeatable releases. The role combines hands-on understanding of source control, branching, builds and delivery pipelines with strong cross-team coordination. You will work closely with engineering teams, Project Managers, Scrum teams, QA and IT to make releases smooth, traceable and increasingly automated.

Duties and responsibilities

Release Coordination & Readiness
  • Coordinate end-to-end software releases across multiple engineering teams and environments
  • Build and maintain release plans together with Project Managers, Product stakeholders, Scrum teams, QA and IT
  • Track release scope, dependencies, readiness criteria, risks and outstanding actions
  • Coordinate integration, regression, UAT and deployment readiness activities with the responsible teams
  • Ensure release packages, versions, documentation and handover information are complete and traceable
  • Coordinate deployment windows and production rollout activities with IT and other operational stakeholders
  • Support post-release verification, issue coordination and lessons learned
Branching, Source Control & Build Engineering
  • Support engineering teams with Git branching, merging, versioning and release-branch practices
  • Help resolve branch, integration and build issues that block releases
  • Coordinate and, where appropriate, execute or troubleshoot software builds and release packaging
  • Maintain clear version and artifact traceability from source code to deployed release
  • Work with development teams to simplify branching strategies and reduce avoidable integration overhead
CI/CD, Automation & DevOps Collaboration
  • Work closely with DevOps / Platform Engineering and IT on CI/CD pipelines, build automation and deployment processes
  • Identify repetitive or error-prone release activities and help drive their automation
  • Support improvements to quality gates, automated tests, artifact handling and deployment reliability
  • Contribute practical release-engineering input to the organization's DevOps maturity journey
  • Use delivery data and DORA-related measures - such as deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate and recovery time - to identify concrete opportunities for improving the release process
  • Support the transition from large release events toward smaller, more frequent and higher-confidence releases
Cross-Team Collaboration & Operational Excellence
  • Act as a pragmatic bridge between developers, Scrum teams, Project Managers, QA, DevOps / Platform Engineering and IT
  • Make release dependencies, blockers and technical risks visible early and drive them to resolution with the responsible owners
  • Create and improve lightweight release procedures, checklists and standards without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy
  • Promote ownership, transparency and continuous improvement around software delivery
  • Share release knowledge and help teams become increasingly self-sufficient in reliable delivery practices

Required Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

Technical Foundation
  • 3+ years of experience in release engineering, software engineering, build engineering, DevOps, technical release management or a closely related role
  • Strong practical understanding of Git-based source control, branching, merging, tagging and versioning
  • Hands-on understanding of software build processes and CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to investigate and troubleshoot build, integration and release issues together with engineers
  • Good understanding of software delivery lifecycles across development, test and production environments
  • Comfort working across different technology stacks and hybrid infrastructure environments; deep expertise in one specific programming language is not required
Delivery & Collaboration
  • Experience coordinating releases or technical deliveries involving multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Scrum teams, developers, QA, DevOps / Platform Engineering and IT operations
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain clarity under release pressure
  • Structured problem-solving mindset and willingness to get hands-on when a release is blocked
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to translate technical release issues for non-specialist stakeholders
  • Ownership mentality and a strong bias toward reliability, automation and continuous improvement
  • English proficiency (written and spoken)
Modern Engineering Mindset
  • Understanding of DevOps and continuous delivery principles
  • Interest in improving engineering flow and release performance using measurable outcomes
  • Pragmatic approach: improve the system step by step while keeping current releases moving
  • Curiosity toward automation, developer tooling and AI-assisted engineering workflows

Advantages

  • Experience with Azure or other cloud environments
  • Experience with containerized or microservices-based applications
  • Experience with deployment or configuration automation
  • Familiarity with DORA metrics and engineering performance measurement
  • Experience in telecommunications, regulated or other mission-critical environments
  • Scripting or programming experience that helps automate build and release activities
  • Experience supporting both Windows- and Linux-based software delivery

What Success Looks Like

  • Releases are predictable, transparent and technically well prepared
  • Teams spend less time fighting branches, builds and manual release steps
  • Release blockers are identified earlier and resolved faster
  • Build and deployment processes become increasingly repeatable and automated
  • Telio can move toward smaller, more frequent releases without compromising reliability or control
