Rendering Technical Artist II
Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, and maintain real-time shaders and materials for League of Legends within a physically based rendering (PBR) workflow, including reusable shader functions and scalable material systems that support multiple champions and skins.
- Apply strong PBR principles across albedo, normal, roughness, metallic, ambient occlusion, emissive, lighting, and reflection inputs to achieve high-quality and visually consistent results.
- Partner closely with Art and Design teams to understand creative goals and translate artistic direction into practical, performant, and scalable rendering solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and support to internal teams and external vendor artists on shader creation, material authoring, implementation, and troubleshooting for premium character content and skins.
- Review and validate assets across various lighting conditions, game environments, and quality settings, identifying and resolving issues related to materials, shaders, textures, lighting, and performance.
- Collaborate with Engineering teams to manage rendering performance, optimize memory usage, and profile shader costs using industry-standard performance analysis tools.
- Integrate and maintain visual assets within the game engine, ensuring consistency with artistic standards, technical requirements, and overall product quality.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, workflow guidelines, best practices, and tools that improve efficiency and enable artists to work more independently.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant professional experience as a Technical Artist within game development or a related real-time graphics environment, with demonstrated ability to deliver technical art solutions independently.
- Proven experience developing, implementing, and troubleshooting shaders and materials within modern real-time rendering pipelines and PBR-based workflows.
- Strong knowledge of shader development, including the ability to work with shader languages such as HLSL, GLSL, or comparable technologies, as well as node-based material and shader systems.
- Solid understanding of modeling, texturing, shading, and lighting principles for games, including experience supporting stylized or hand-crafted visual art styles.
- Experience working with commercial or proprietary game engines, such as Unity, Unreal Engine, or equivalent platforms.
- Understanding of rendering optimization techniques, including performance profiling, GPU analysis, memory management, and content optimization across multiple hardware configurations.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills, with the ability to create clear guidelines, standards, and workflows for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git, Perforce, or equivalent collaboration tools.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, including artists, designers, engineers, producers, and external partners.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance visual quality, technical feasibility, and performance requirements.
