Research Fellow in Kinetic Mechanism Development, Validation, and Reduction (HYCOMBS)

Open 21d

Summary

Research Fellow develops, validates, and reduces chemical kinetic mechanisms for hydrogen and ammonia combustion to support zero-carbon fuel models for engines and turbines.

Job Offer: Research Fellow in Kinetic Mechanism Development, Validation, and Reduction

Position: Research Fellow – Kinetic Mechanism Description, Validation, and Reduction

Location: Singapore(CREATE/CARES Lab) and international collaboration (CNRS, Tohoku University, NTU, NUS)

Project: HYCOMBS –Hydrogen and Ammonia Combustion for Decarbonisation

Description: Join the international HYCOMBS research consortium to advance the fundamental understanding of hydrogen and ammonia combustion. You will focus on the development, validation, and reduction of detailed and skeletal chemical-kinetic mechanisms for H2/NH3 and hydrocarbon/NH3 blends. Your work will directly support the creation of predictive models for gas turbines and internal combustion engines operating with zero-carbon fuels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms for H2/NH3 and dual-fuel hydrocarbon-ammonia mixtures.
  • Validate mechanisms using experimental data (ignition delay times, laminar burning velocities, extinction strain rates, pollutant formation) from international partner labs.
  • Apply advanced reduction techniques (e.g., Principal Component Analysis, Genetic Algorithms) to produce skeletal mechanisms suitable for CFD applications.
  • Use and contribute to open-source and commercial software (e.g., Cantera, RMG, SRM Engine Suite, MoDS) for mechanism development and simulation.
  • Collaborate with experimentalists and modelers across the HYCOMBS consortium.
  • Document and disseminate results in reports, publications, and software deliverables.

Requirements:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or related field.
  • Strong background in combustion kinetics, reaction mechanism development, and reduction techniques.
  • Experience with combustion modeling tools (e.g., Cantera, RMG, CHEMKIN, or similar).
  • Familiarity with data analysis, sensitivity analysis, and informatics approaches for chemical data.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, international team.

Benefits:

  • Work in a world-class, multi-institutional research environment.
  • Access to unique experimental data and advanced computational resources.
  • Opportunities for international collaboration and travel.
