Research Fellow in Safety Evaluation and CFD Modeling of Hydrogen/Ammonia Combustion (HYCOMBS)

Open 22d

Summary

Researcher models hydrogen/ammonia combustion safety using high-fidelity CFD and detonation physics to support zero-carbon fuel deployment.

Job Offer: Research Fellow in Safety Evaluation and CFD Modeling of Hydrogen/Ammonia Combustion

Position: Research Fellow – Safety Evaluation and CFD Modeling

Location: Singapore(CREATE/CARES Lab) and international collaboration (CNRS, NUS, NTU, Tohoku University)

Project: HYCOMBS –Hydrogen and Ammonia Combustion for Decarbonisation

Description: We are seeking a talented researcher to join the HYCOMBS consortium, focusing on the evaluation of safety aspects and advanced CFD modeling of hydrogen and ammonia combustion systems. The role involves developing and validating high-fidelity computational models for detonation, ignition risk, and fuel leakage scenarios, supporting the safe deployment of zero-carbon fuels in power and transport sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and validate LES-based CFD models for hydrogen and ammonia combustion, including detonation and deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT).
  • Simulate and analyze fuel leakage and ignition scenarios, including cryogenic and high-pressure conditions.
  • Integrate advanced sub-grid scale combustion models and machine learning techniques for risk prediction.
  • Collaborate with experimental teams to validate models using data from detonation tubes, optical cells, and engine tests.
  • Contribute to the development of predictive tools and safety guidelines for industry and regulatory bodies.
  • Prepare technical reports, publications, and software deliverables.

Requirements:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Proven experience in CFD modeling of combustion (LES, RANS, DNS), preferably with hydrogen/ammonia or alternative fuels.
  • Familiarity with safety analysis, detonation, ignition risk, and computational modeling of leaks.
  • Proficiency in CFD software (e.g., OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent, or similar) and programming (Python, C++, or similar).
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills in a multidisciplinary, international environment.

Benefits:

  • Be part of a leading international research program with direct impact on decarbonisation and safety.
  • Access to unique experimental facilities and computational resources.
  • Opportunities for collaboration and professional development.
