Research Intern – Power Markets

Terms of reference

Designation offered: Research Intern

Duration: 3-4 months

Reporting to: Programme Associate / Programme Lead

Location: New Delhi

Team: Power Markets


Purpose:

CEEW seeks to hire a candidate to conduct research on the systemic impacts of demand-side management strategies on India’s power system. The candidate is expected to assist the team in designing demand-side management scenarios for open-source production cost models. The role will also involve engagement with government, industry and civil society stakeholders at the national and state levels on gathering data and inputs.

Responsibilities and accountabilities

Research:

· Gather and analyse high-frequency historical data on electricity demand for an Indian state

· Conduct a literature review on the estimated/projected growth in energy demand and changes in the load profile due to specific policies for the state

· Design 2-3 scenarios for annual energy demand and hourly load profile for the state based on reasonable assumptions on the impacts of various policies

· Carry out / assist the team in carrying out production cost simulation for the demand-side management scenarios

· Present the analysis through memos and/or presentations for validation and finalisation of assumptions and scenarios

· Assist the team in running the production cost model and extract and analyse the results

· Assist in preparing high quality research reports/papers/presentations/fact sheets and other material based on the results

Programme assistance

· Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes.

· Accompany the other team members for meetings with other stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow up.

Selection Criteria:

Educational qualification

· Enrolled in or completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering/power system operations or related programmes.

Key skills

· Strong quantitative research skills

· Proficient in MS Excel and MS Word

· Proficiency in R/Python for data analysis will be an advantage

· Insightful and concise writing in English

· Keen interest in issues related to the power sector and economic policy

· Keen interest in policy analysis, regulations, and governance.

· Striving for rigour in research and quality in work output.

· Ability to drive research with minimum assistance.

· Ability to dig into details while keeping the broader objectives and big picture in view.
