We are seeking a Research Manager (expert-led Strategy & Insights) to join our APAC Research Team, based in Tokyo, Japan. The successful candidate will be supporting a range of life sciences, tech, industrial and private equity clients on a number of strategic topics, including but not limited to market mapping, voice-of-customer, commercial due diligence, and growth strategy engagements. We are looking for strategy consultant generalists who have had exposure to the Industrials (Keiretsu / Sogo Shosha), Technology and Life Sciences sectors in particular. Candidates who possess a strong fundamental consulting toolkit and a desire to apply those skills across diverse sectors are invited to apply.
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Dual role supporting all aspects of client project scoping, development and closing, manage projects from start to finish and work hand-in-hand with each engagement team and client to ensure top quality level of service and deliverables
- Lead engagement teams with market research, pitch materials preparation, report writing etc. for client pitching and project delivery
- Develop and grow the expert-led research business through collaboration with internal business development and client services teams in Japan
- Exposure to a broad range of functional responsibilities, including product development, capital allocation, sales, marketing, and operations
- Regular exposure to the regional GLG senior management team and broader organisation, and opportunities to build strong relationships with our clients
- The position will report to the geographic lead / Vice President for North APAC research who will provide a close mentoring environment to rapidly accelerate development in Japan. Research is a fast growing line of business at GLG which creates significant opportunities for increasing responsibilities
- Lead Research business development initiatives to expand GLG’s footprint in the Japan market, acting as a bridge between research delivery and commercial growth.
An ideal candidate will have the following:
- Minimum ~5 years’ experience at a strategy consulting or research firm
- Experience supporting Industrials, Technology and Life Sciences projects is very desirable; however, a generalist mindset and the ability to pivot across multiple industries is essential.
- Solid core consulting skills, including slide-making, story-telling, client communication, stakeholder management, project management, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional stakeholder relationships
- Superior written and oral communication skills in the Japanese business context.
- Full business proficiency in English and Japanese is mandatory.
- Solid computer skills, i.e., Microsoft Office
- Entrepreneurial zeal along with successful track record working in a close team environment
- Act with the highest integrity and professionalism in all their endeavours
- Think creatively and focus on opportunities for growth
- Exhibit constant attention to detail and demonstrate the ability and initiative to handle increasing responsibility over time
- Bachelor's or higher degree or equivalent work experience
