Role purpose

We are looking for a Research Manager to lead our Gas & LNG-focused members of the Commodities Global Analyst Team. This global team, based in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the UK, and the US, helps produce detailed market supply-demand, cost and price forecasts at the asset, regional and global levels. Commodities is one of our fastest-growing businesses, and the Global Analyst Team plays a major role in transforming it. It is also a key enabler in Wood Mackenzie’s purpose to transform the way we power our planet.

Main responsibilities

You will hire and lead a group of talented Research Analysts and Associates based in Calgary, Edinburgh, Houston, London, Mexico City and Rio. You will build a strong talent pipeline and support development of those analysts.
You will communicate a clear purpose and set of goals to your team and will collaborate with the Head of the Commodities Global Analyst Team and the other Research Managers to build effective hiring, onboarding and development processes for our Gas & LNG-focused colleagues. You will work closely with senior experts across the business to build strong coaching relationships across the Global Analyst Team.

In partnership with the managers of the Assets and Markets Research teams, you will ensure the efficient and timely delivery of our research programme in Gas & LNG. Those managers set the research agenda; you make sure the team is resourced, capable, and on schedule to deliver it.

You will also identify opportunities for your direct reports in different functions (e.g. Consulting, Product, Sales) and support the wider transformation of our Commodities business.

Qualifications

  • You have at least three to five years of management experience, having previously led a small to mid-sized team. The people around you recognise your ability and passion to develop others, building a diverse and inclusive environment in which colleagues thrive and deliver high-quality results.
  • You have excellent communication skills, both with your direct reports and key stakeholders across the business. You build effective, collaborative relationships across the business and can influence at every level. You understand that diversity of experience and thought makes a difference and that working across different geographies requires cultural appreciation.
  • You know the value of data and expert insight for business decision-making and are equally passionate about leadership and excellence. You set a high bar for your own work and hold your team to it, and you would rather raise the standard of the group than be the strongest performer in it.
  • You currently work (or have previously worked) in the energy and natural resources industries and you are familiar with the challenges and opportunities our customers face, particularly around the energy transition and the need to change the way we power the planet.
  • You are comfortable leading through change, focused on continuous improvement and play a key role in implementing better ways of working. You have an analytical, commercial mindset and can turn a mix of data and market intelligence into analysis that stands up to scrutiny. You know the Gas & LNG markets well enough to challenge the work. You can sense-check a supply-demand balance, a cost curve, or a price forecast and ask the right question of the analyst who built it. You do not need to be the deepest expert in the room, but you do need the fluency to hold quality.
  • You have delivered through a matrix before. You are comfortable being accountable for output you do not directly own, and you know how to keep a shared programme on track without formal authority over every contributor.

Equal Opportunities

We are an equal opportunities employer. This means we are committed to recruiting the best people regardless of their race, colour, religion, age, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity), national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
