Research Technologist - Optical Microscopy Core

Summary

Supports biomedical research by operating optical microscopy equipment, performing assays, cell/tissue culture, and data analysis to generate imaging data for scientific discovery. Works with advanced microscopy platforms like confocal microscopy and fluorescence imaging under supervision of Principal Investigators.

Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals, grant commitments, i.e. assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc. Monitors results, reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications. Collects, enters and summarizes data. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Performs basic statistical data analysis; prepares tables/charts/graphs and assists in organizing data. Presents at research laboratory meetings and contributes to writing of manuscripts. Works under supervision and may perform some assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator.

About the Optical Microscopy and Cell Analysis Core

The Optical Microscopy segment of the OMCA provides researchers with access to advanced light microscopy technologies, imaging expertise, and image analysis resources that support a wide range of basic, translational, and clinical research applications. The core offers training, consultation, and technical support for a diverse portfolio of microscopy platforms and imaging techniques, including confocal microscopy, slide scanning, image analysis, tissue clearing, and emerging high-resolution imaging approaches. The Optical Microscopy and Cell Analysis Core partners with investigators throughout the research lifecycle to generate high-quality imaging data and accelerate scientific discovery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related scientific field.
  • Familiarity with light microscopy principles, including both upright and inverted microscope systems.
  • Basic understanding of confocal microscopy and fluorescence imaging techniques.
  • Experience working in a biological or biomedical research laboratory environment.
  • Strong aptitude for learning new technologies, scientific instrumentation, and software applications.
  • Comfort using computers, imaging software, and data management tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, with the ability to work effectively with investigators, students, and research staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Interest in microscopy, imaging technologies, and supporting diverse research projects.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and developing expertise across a broad range of microscopy platforms and imaging techniques.

This individual will have strong communication skills, an interest in microscopy and imaging technologies, and a willingness to learn and support a wide variety of advanced microscopy platforms and research applications.


Requires bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science, or an associates degree with 6 years of relevant laboratory experience. Must exhibit a solid understanding of lab techniques, equipment, and safety. Must have the ability to organize and carry out laboratory techniques independently and in a team setting. Experience with basic data analysis is required. This position requires demonstrated writing skills.
