Residential Therapist

Make an Impact Where It Matters Most

Burlington United Methodist Family Services, Inc. d/b/a Star of Hope Family Services is seeking a compassionate, skilled Residential Therapist to join our residential treatment team.

If you are a mental health professional who wants to do more than provide therapy from an office, this is an opportunity to become an integral part of a multidisciplinary team helping children and adolescents heal, grow, and build a path toward a successful future.

What You'll Do

As a Residential Therapist, you will provide clinical services and therapeutic support to youth receiving residential treatment. You will work closely with residents, families, Treatment Associates, case managers, clinical professionals, and residential leadership to ensure each youth receives coordinated, individualized care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide individual therapy to assigned residents at least weekly or as identified in the resident's treatment plan.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans, behavior support plans, and other required clinical documentation.
  • Complete therapy notes and clinical records accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Facilitate therapeutic groups based on the needs of residents.
  • Serve as an active member of multidisciplinary treatment teams, residential staffings, admission meetings, and other clinical meetings.
  • Provide clinical consultation and support to Treatment Associates and other residential staff.
  • Assist residential staff in developing effective supportive counseling and therapeutic interaction skills.
  • Provide clinical oversight within assigned residential cottages in accordance with Agency policies and procedures.
  • Participate in pre-placement, admission, treatment, discharge, and transition planning.
  • Participate in court hearings and multidisciplinary team meetings in coordination with case management.
  • Respond to clinical and behavioral crises involving residents and provide appropriate therapeutic intervention.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for residential clinical needs.
  • Participate in peer reviews, clinical record reviews, and quality-improvement activities.
  • Advocate for the safety, well-being, treatment needs, and long-term success of each resident.
  • Maintain resident records in accordance with Agency requirements, professional standards, and applicable West Virginia licensing requirements.

What We're Looking For

Required Education and Licensure

Candidates must have:

  • A Master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related behavioral health field from an accredited college or university; and
  • Professional licensure in their respective discipline or be actively working toward obtaining appropriate West Virginia licensure.

A minimum of two years of post-graduate experience treating or supervising children or adolescents with emotional or behavioral needs is preferred.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Builds strong therapeutic relationships with children and adolescents.
  • Understands trauma, behavioral health needs, and the complexities of residential treatment.
  • Can remain calm and clinically focused during crisis situations.
  • Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Can provide clinical guidance and consultation to direct-care staff.
  • Demonstrates sound professional boundaries and clinical judgment.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Produces timely, accurate, and professional clinical documentation.
  • Can manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced residential environment.
  • Demonstrates respect, integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and professionalism.
  • Is comfortable working independently while remaining highly collaborative with the treatment team.

More Than Therapy

Residential treatment provides a unique opportunity to see the whole child—not just the challenges that bring them into treatment.

Our therapists work alongside the people who support youth throughout their day. That means you have the opportunity to help translate treatment goals into practical strategies that can be reinforced in the residential environment, school setting, family relationships, and everyday life.

At Star of Hope Family Services, our approach recognizes the physical, social, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of the children and families we serve.

Additional Requirements

This is a required-driving position. Candidates must:

  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Meet Agency requirements for operating Agency-owned or leased vehicles.
  • Be willing and able to transport residents when necessary.
  • Be able to travel during daytime and evening hours when required.
  • Successfully complete all required background investigations and employment screenings.
  • Be able to perform required residential safety and crisis-intervention training techniques, with reasonable accommodation when applicable.

The position may require work in changing weather conditions and environments associated with providing services in a 24-hour residential treatment setting.

Our Mission

Star of Hope Family Services exists to prevent harm and provide hope to hurting children and families.

We believe every child has worth, potential, and the capacity for growth. Our employees share a commitment to providing compassionate, family-focused, trauma-responsive services while treating every person with respect and dignity.

If you're looking for an opportunity where your clinical skills can make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of children and adolescents, we invite you to apply and become part of the Star of Hope team.
