About the position
Assistant
I-Field and Laboratory Technician are responsible for supporting the
Implementation of Laboratory and Field research activities within the Bean
Breeding Program. The Incumbent assists in field trial establishment, crop
management, data collection, harvesting seed handling, and maintenance of
research sites to ensure high-quality research data and successful execution of
breeding activities.
The
Field and Laboratory Technician are responsible for supporting field and
Laboratory research activities within the Bean Breeding Program. The incumbent
assists in the establishment and management of field trials, sample collection,
laboratory, and field equipment to ensure the generation of accurate,
high-quality research data.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Work Closely with Bean Breeders,
researchers, technician, laboratory staff and greenhouse staff to implement
field research activities.
- Collaborates with project teams and
research partners during field trials, demonstrations and laboratory training
activities.
- Support interns, students and
visiting scientists during field operations and laboratory discussions.
- Participate in Planning meetings,
field evaluations and research activities.
- Maintain effective communication
with supervisors regarding laboratory results, field observation and research
progress
- Support in tissue sampling,
mechanical inoculation of viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycete, nematode and
other pathogens in fields, greenhouses and culturing them.
- Support the process of bioassays
with insects/vectors.

- Support in routine data collection
for advanced breeding and seed multiplication at different locations.
- Support in preparation of clear,
accurate, and concise reports of results, and communicate them to colleagues or
stakeholders.
- Visiting fields regularly to monitor
weeds, disease development, and insect growth.
- Assisting the greenhouse activities
and fieldwork.
- Involve in physical field activities
during plating, weeding, and harvesting
- Carry out any other duties that will
be assigned by the supervisor
- Assisting with research work and
other project activities
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture,
Crop Science, Plant Science, Biology, Biotechnology, Laboratory Science,
Agronomy or related fields.
- Additional training in
Laboratory techniques or agricultural research will be an added advantage.
- At least 1-2 years of
experience in Agricultural Research and Laboratory Operations. field
operations, crop production, or agricultural research.
- Experience in laboratory
sample preparation, filed trial management, and data collection.
- Experience working with
breeding programs or research institutions is an added advantage.
- Familiarity with
laboratory safety procedures and quality assurance practices in an added
advantage
- Top of Form
Knowledge of agricultural research methods and Laboratory procedures
- Ability to
establish and manage field experiments according to research photostability to

- Competence in
collecting, processing and analysing laboratory samples. Competence in

- Experience with
laboratory equipment operation, calibrations and maintenance.
- Strong data
collection, record keeping and documentation skills
- Knowledge of
seed processing, storage and inventory management.
- Competence in
collecting, processing and analysing laboratory samples Ability to identify
crop pests, diseases and physiological disorders.
- Familiarity
with laboratory quality control and biosafety procedures.
- Good computers
skills, including Microsoft Excel and electronic data collection tools.
- Strong
Analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work
independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary research teams
Terms of employment
This position
is a Temporary Position based in Arusha,
Tanzania. The initial fixed contract
will be for 6 Months.
