ROLE OVERVIEW

The Roadway Design Intern works alongside experienced engineers and design professionals to help create transportation solutions that connect communities and keep people moving safely. This hands-on internship provides an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge and engineering principles to meaningful highway and roadway projects while developing technical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, eager to learn, and committed to producing accurate, high-quality work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilizes computer software to create detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts, including plans for the construction of highways and\or local roads, including but not limited to plan and profile views, cross sections, details, and schedules.
  • Performs various tasks to support engineering analyses, report production, and designs, including basic calculations.
  • Participates in and ensures QC/QA procedures are followed. Maintains accurate design standards and procedures in assigned work.
  • Cooperates and coordinates with engineers and design technicians on project activities.
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Pursuing Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in engineering from ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • English language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning skills: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc. AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiency preferred.
  • Organizational skills: ability to prioritize and organize tasks; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Remote connectivity device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, etc.) with data plan sufficient for company requirements, including multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a productive/technical nature.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Ability to sit and manipulate computer mouse up to eight hours per day.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk, including over uneven surfaces, for extended periods of time for field visits.
  • Ability to see clearly 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting with adequate ventilation.
  • Moderate noise.
  • Occasionally outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, wind, etc.).

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Fixed schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, including required core hours.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
