Description
Rust Architects, Backend Engineers & Distributed Systems Developers. Remote AI Project
We are seeking experienced Rust Architects, Backend Engineers, Systems Developers, and Distributed Systems Specialists to contribute to a remote AI-training project focused on production Rust, backend architecture, asynchronous systems, concurrency, service design, infrastructure, and technical debugging.
You will solve and validate realistic Rust backend problems, assess whether implementations are correct and production-ready, build reproducible environments, and evaluate architecture, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
What You’ll Do
- Solve and validate complex Rust backend engineering problems involving APIs, persistence, service behavior, concurrency, performance, and reliability.
- Translate functional requirements, performance expectations, and failure-handling requirements into reproducible implementation workflows.
- Design and review backend services, service boundaries, APIs, data flows, and infrastructure dependencies.
- Prepare Rust crate workspaces, configuration files, test fixtures, dependency services, databases, and containerized environments.
- Debug issues involving async execution, race conditions, deadlocks, task coordination, backpressure, resource usage, or service failures.
- Evaluate whether backend implementations are correct, maintainable, scalable, and suitable for production use.
- Create or review automated tests that verify behavior across normal, failure, and edge-case scenarios.
- Analyze performance bottlenecks and identify opportunities to improve latency, throughput, memory usage, or resource efficiency.
- Document architecture decisions, implementation tradeoffs, failure modes, and technical reasoning clearly.
- Provide structured feedback that helps improve the quality of backend engineering tasks and AI-generated solutions.

We also welcome Backend Engineers, Backend Developers, API Engineers, Platform Engineers, and Service Engineers with substantial Rust experience.
Systems backgrounds may include Systems Engineers, Systems Programmers, Infrastructure Engineers, Runtime Engineers, and Low-Level Software Engineers.
Distributed systems backgrounds may include Distributed Systems Engineers, Cloud Backend Engineers, High-Performance Backend Engineers, and Reliability-Focused Software Engineers.
Architecture backgrounds may include Software Architects, Backend Architects, Platform Architects, and Technical Leads with clear ownership of Rust-based systems.
Additional relevant backgrounds include Open-Source Rust Contributors, Database Engineers, Networking Engineers, Developer Infrastructure Engineers, and Research Engineers working on production-grade Rust systems.
Requirements
- Strong professional or open-source experience with Rust.
- Strong knowledge of backend service architecture, APIs, data systems, concurrency, and production software design.
- Experience building substantial backend systems rather than isolated proof-of-concept code.
- Strong understanding of async Rust and concurrent programming.
- Ability to evaluate correctness, scalability, maintainability, and reliability.
- Experience with databases, service dependencies, and backend infrastructure.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to build reproducible development and testing environments.
- Clear technical writing and architecture communication.
- Comfortable working independently in a remote environment.
Preferred Background
- Professional experience as a Rust Architect, Senior Rust Engineer, Backend Architect, or Technical Lead.
- Experience with Tokio, Axum, Actix Web, Tonic, Hyper, SQLx, Diesel, SeaORM, or comparable Rust ecosystem tools.
- Experience designing distributed systems, high-throughput APIs, or latency-sensitive backend services.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, NATS, RabbitMQ, or similar data and messaging systems.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Linux, and CI/CD workflows.
- Experience profiling and optimizing Rust applications.
- Experience reviewing architecture, conducting design reviews, or owning backend technical direction.
- Experience contributing to substantial open-source Rust projects is valuable.
This opportunity is ideal for experienced Rust engineers who can take a backend requirement, design an appropriate architecture, implement or review the service, reproduce the environment, diagnose subtle concurrency or reliability problems, and determine whether the final system is truly suitable for production use. We are a referral partner of the client.
