Job Title: Safety Supervisor
Reports to: Safety Manager
Summary: The Safety Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that employees receive proper training
regarding company-specific and Occupational Safety & Health Act, or OSHA, safety requirements at
the assigned location. The position ensures that all occupational accidents, illnesses or near misses are
promptly and thoroughly investigated and documented as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Safety Training: Ensuring that workers are properly trained regarding company-specific and
Occupational Safety and Health Act, or OSHA, safety requirements. Training responsibilities may
involve conducting safety orientations, daily "toolbox" safety meetings, periodic safety meetings
and formal training sessions on a wide range of safety-related topics. Delivers the safety portion of
new hire orientation.
• Safety Policies: Actively involved in maintaining and communicating safety-related policies and
procedures, as well as ensuring that they are followed. They may be involved in determining the
need for new policies and procedures and writing, editing, and updating policy and procedure
documents, posters and handbooks. They are also responsible for enforcement of safety policies and
procedures, including making decisions regarding appropriate discipline for infractions.
• Workplace Inspections: proactively involved in ensuring that proper practices are observed in the
workplace. Perform frequent safety inspections at locations including work areas, offices, and
company vehicles. Observes working conditions, equipment, and employee behaviors to identify
safety problems and take corrective action.
• Safety Equipment Maintenance: Responsible for making sure that all safety equipment is properly
maintained. Tasks may include facility fire inspections, ensuring fire extinguishers are charged
regularly, verifying that first aid kits are properly stocked, eyewash stations are clean and in good
repair, and ensuring that company vehicles and equipment are safe.
• Hazard Investigations: Investigates on their own, or enlists assistance from other supervisory
personnel, all occupational accidents and illnesses to determine the cause and to prevent future
occurrences. Ensure all investigation reports include factual statements of what occurred,
conclusions and recommendations for corrective or preventive actions. Assists in the abatement of
future potential work hazards.
• Regulatory Compliance: responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety-related regulatory
requirements, including OSHA standards and Environmental Protection Agency requirements.
Maintains awareness of obligations specific to their location and the types of jobs workers are
performing. Ensures that workers have proper safety credentials and personal safety equipment.
Ensure proper safety signage is in place. Verifies that there are no violations in the workplace, and
they must comply with all reporting requirements.
Education/Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree is Health & Safety or Industrial Hygiene and two years industrial experience, or
the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Previous protein or food
processing experience preferred.
• Ability to problem solve and manage projects, as well as the written and verbal communication
skills necessary to solve a wide range of complex, multi-disciplinary problems, which must consider
short and intermediate term company-wide planning.
• Must demonstrate integrity and the ability to apply principles of integrity and logic to a wide range
of practical problems. Ability to work independently, efficiently, and proactively on multiple
deadlines while maintaining a commitment to quality.
• Ability to communicate, deliver presentations and build strong working relationships at all levels of
the organization to influence desired outcomes.
• Working knowledge of PCs and proficiency in MS Office Suite, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and
Excel.
• Ability to compose sensitive, non-routine correspondence requiring tact and diplomacy and/or
complex reports or summaries for which established formats generally do not exist.
