School of Design and Media - Graphic Design Assistant Lecturer

Purpose
  1. To provide an opportunity for an enthusiastic early-career academic and design practitioner to contribute to learning, teaching, and assessment within the field of Graphic Design, with particular expertise in Typography, Type Design, and Visual Communication.
  2. Under the supervision and guidance of senior academic staff, to support the delivery of teaching, learning, and assessment activities and provide academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  3. To contribute to a combination of teaching, scholarship, professional practice, and administrative activities while supporting the University's internationalisation agenda and commitment to academic excellence.
  4. To contribute to the delivery of modules across Graphic Design disciplines, including typography, branding, visual identity, editorial design, publication design, information design, digital design, and related areas of visual communication.
  5. Under the supervision of senior academic staff, to contribute to the assessment and feedback process and support students in developing creative, technical, and critical-thinking skills.
  6. To act as an Academic Personal Tutor, providing guidance and support that enhances student engagement, progression, and academic success.
Main Duties and Responsibilities Teaching and Learning
  1. Under the supervision and guidance of senior academic staff, deliver seminars, tutorials, workshops, studio-based teaching, computer laboratory sessions, and other learning activities using established curricula.
  2. Support the delivery of Graphic Design modules, with particular emphasis on Typography, Type Design, Visual Communication, Branding, Editorial Design, and related design practices.
  3. Provide academic support to students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate studies and contribute to creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
  4. Demonstrate contemporary design practice and encourage students to develop creative, conceptual, technical, and professional skills relevant to the graphic design industry.
  5. Support students in developing portfolios, design projects, presentations, and professional practice skills.
Assessment and Academic Support
  1. Under the direction of senior academic staff, mark and moderate assignments, projects, presentations, examinations, and other assessment activities in accordance with established academic regulations and quality standards.
  2. Provide constructive feedback to students that supports learning, development, and academic achievement.
  3. Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, assessment records, and academic progress documentation.
  4. Contribute to academic tutoring activities and provide guidance on academic, personal, and professional development matters.
Curriculum and Student Experience
  1. Contribute to the enhancement of teaching materials, learning resources, and curriculum development activities within Graphic Design programmes.
  2. Support student engagement activities, exhibitions, competitions, guest lectures, field trips, industry projects, and other co-curricular initiatives.
  3. Assist in promoting the School through recruitment events, open days, portfolio reviews, and outreach activities.
Scholarship, Industry Engagement and Professional Practice
  1. Engage in scholarly, creative, or professional activities that maintain subject expertise and support teaching excellence.
  2. Contribute to consultancy projects, professional development programmes, knowledge exchange activities, or industry collaborations where appropriate.
  3. Maintain awareness of contemporary developments in typography, visual communication, graphic design practice, and emerging technologies relevant to the discipline.
Administrative and Professional Responsibilities
  1. Contribute to administrative duties associated with programme delivery and School activities.
  2. Ensure compliance with University policies relating to health and safety, equality, diversity and inclusion, dignity and respect, and academic quality assurance.
  3. Undertake continuous professional development and, where appropriate, commence or continue postgraduate study relevant to the discipline.
Additional Duties

Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required within the scope, spirit, and grading of the post.
