About the Opportunity

The Scientific Programmer II bridges the gap between scientific development and operational production by integrating, testing, validating, and supporting scientific software applications in a remote work environment. This role collaborates with Science Teams, developers, and stakeholders to document requirements, establish test baselines, verify outputs, and ensure code changes are successfully transitioned into reliable operational environments.

Success is demonstrated through accurate integrations, effective stakeholder coordination, high-quality testing and documentation, and the delivery of dependable production-ready solutions.

What You Will Do in This Role

The Scientific Programmer II supports the integration, testing, validation, and operational deployment of scientific software and algorithms, ensuring accurate, reliable, and production-ready solutions.

  • Understand and document algorithm inputs, outputs, and production rules across all units, including how requirements differ between units, to ensure accurate implementation and operational consistency.
  • Define operational run procedures, including run triggers, intermediate file handoffs, and final delivered output products to support reliable and repeatable production processing.
  • Establish and maintain a baseline test case for each project; create one when the Science Team does not provide it, and validate it with them to ensure scientific and operational accuracy.
  • Compare all future code updates and changes against the established baseline to assess impacts, validate expected behavior, and maintain system integrity.
  • Review regression testing results as applicable and identify, document, and resolve discrepancies affecting algorithm performance or output quality.
  • Communicate progress and issues across stakeholders, including tracking tasks in Jira and coordinating with the Science Team and other stakeholders to support project execution and operational readiness.
  • Integrate code in accordance with established coding standards, interface modules, and build scripts; perform static compilation and complete required project checklists to ensure successful deployment into operational environments.
  • Verify output file accuracy and standards compliance, including format and logging requirements, to ensure data quality and adherence to project specifications.
  • Demo code and production rules at delivery, and provide ongoing guidance and support during transition to facilitate successful adoption and operational handoff.
  • Test against upstream input changes and provide test cases to support downstream algorithm changes, ensuring continued compatibility across interconnected systems and workflows.
  • Participate in code reviews across projects to promote code quality, maintainability, adherence to standards, and knowledge sharing among team members.

What You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related scientific or technical discipline.
  • 4–6 years of experience supporting scientific software, system integration, software deployment, testing, validation, or operational environments.
  • Hands-on experience with FORTRAN, C, or C++ for scientific application support, integration, maintenance, or performance-focused development.
  • Working knowledge of Python for automation, scripting, testing, or application support activities.
  • Strong understanding of software integration principles, configuration management, APIs, interfaces, data flows, and production processing workflows.
  • Experience supporting containerized applications using Docker and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve software integration, compatibility, and operational issues across complex systems.
  • Experience supporting software testing, regression analysis, validation activities, and verification of scientific or technical outputs.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and scientific teams.
