A Scientist opportunity has arisen with an established, innovative organisation working on cutting-edge detection technology used in some of the world's most security-critical environments. Are you a hands-on, technically curious scientist who is ready to take on a role where your work genuinely matters?


The Role

The Scientist will take ownership of a broad range of scientific activities supporting a market-leading detection product through its ongoing development and evolution. Day to day, this means designing and carrying out experimental investigations, critically evaluating results, building and adapting laboratory equipment, and translating findings into practical improvements — including developing the algorithms that underpin how the product responds to newly identified threats. The role also involves engaging directly with internal teams, customers, and end users, presenting technical findings clearly to a range of audiences.


This is not a purely bench-based position. Alongside strong laboratory skills, the successful candidate will bring genuine hands-on experience of troubleshooting, modifying, and understanding the inner workings of scientific instruments — not just operating them. Occasional off-site work to support trials and field testing may also be required.

The science team sits at the heart of product development, working collaboratively across engineering, product management, and external stakeholders.


What experience does the Scientist need?

  • A PhD in chemistry, physics, or a closely related discipline is preferred; alternatively, a Master's degree combined with hands-on commercial laboratory experience — conducting experiments, gathering measurements, and working with scientific instruments in an applied setting — will also be considered.
  • Practical experience working with and understanding analytical instrumentation at a deeper level than routine operation: ion mobility spectrometry is ideal, but mass spectrometry, other spectrometry techniques, spectroscopy, or chromatography backgrounds are all relevant, particularly where the candidate has modified, repaired, customised or designed equipment.
  • Solid data analysis and numerical skills, with a demonstrated ability to interpret complex experimental results, identify patterns, and draw well-reasoned conclusions.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to lead technical discussions, present findings to varied audiences, and manage their own workload with a high degree of independence.
