Screed Operator
Position Overview
The Screed Operator is responsible for operating and controlling the screed on an asphalt paving machine to ensure asphalt is placed accurately, consistently, and according to project specifications. This position plays a key role in producing smooth, high-quality pavement while working safely as part of a paving crew.
This is a hands-on field position that requires experience with asphalt paving operations, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and teamwork.
What You'll Do
- Operate and control the screed on an asphalt paving machine to achieve proper grade, slope, width, and mat thickness.
- Monitor the flow of asphalt material through the paver to ensure consistent placement and quality.
- Read and understand paving plans, grades, drainage requirements, paving patterns, aggregate sizes, job specifications, and compaction requirements.
- Work closely with the paving crew to ensure efficient and accurate paving operations.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections and complete required documentation.
- Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; report major mechanical issues to the supervisor.
- Maintain paving equipment in a clean, safe, and efficient operating condition.
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations.
- Communicate effectively with the Foreman regarding daily work assignments and project expectations.
- Identify and report safety concerns, equipment issues, or jobsite hazards.
- Assist in training and mentoring less-experienced equipment operators.
- Support plant and jobsite operations as needed.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Three to five years of experience operating the screed on an asphalt paving machine preferred.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- CDL Class A with tanker endorsement preferred or willingness to obtain one.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Strong understanding of asphalt paving techniques, grades, drainage, compaction, and paving specifications.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently while following project plans and supervisor direction.
