Summary

A Scrum Master embedded in Services Australia's DVA ecosystem, supporting agile delivery teams day to day: facilitating ceremonies, removing blockers, coaching team members, and working with Product Owners on backlog prioritisation. Core focus is agile/Scrum practice within a government environment.

1. Scrum Masters support the delivery team, and monitor and improve performance of the team. They use agile methodologies, learning and iterating the product and processes frequently to meet user needs. They work with Delivery Managers to remove blockers and support the delivery team so that they can maintain delivery throughput.

2. The role will place you as a Scrum Master within the DVA ecosystem.

3. Scrum Masters in Services Australia may work within the following scenarios:

o working within or across agile multi-disciplinary teams to support the problem definition, prioritisation, design, planning, development, implementation and acceptance of products;

o guiding individuals or teams to work using a range of different agile values, principles and practices to improve BAU functions;

o within a project management environment helping teams understand and use a range of different agile values, principles and practices

4. Scrum Masters play a key role by addressing and removing issues and impediments to the team’s progress and facilitating team’s key events. They support the team to negotiate priorities and goals with the Product Owner and protect them from outside interruptions and distractions. They also support the team to establish and maintain velocity ensuring they remain on track to meet their agreed goals.

5. Scrum Masters work under limited direction of a manager. They exercise both initiative and judgement in the application of agile values, principles and practices. Scrum masters help to balance the work of the team in the context of competing priorities, including contributing to planning, changes in workplace practices and business improvement strategies.

6. Scrum Masters support Product Owners to ensure there is an appropriate backlog of prioritised work items based on the overall strategy and overarching business objectives.

7. The role will involve having or the ability to gain knowledge of Services Australia’s software development lifecycle, tools, services, deployment procedures and cyber security policies as well as industry best practices. You will work closely with Software Architects, Project Manager, Product Owners, Analysts, Testers and Developers with the shared purpose of building simple, helpful, respectful and transparent services for everyday Australians.



Requirements

Key duties and responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities may include:

1. build the team’s knowledge of agile values, and principles, as well as techniques, processes and tools

2. in collaboration with the team, develop a mutually agreed social contract outlining team behaviours, practices and agile process rules

3. plan and facilitate agile ceremonies including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint reviews and retrospectives

4. assist the Product Owner with reviewing and refining the product backlog, re-prioritising and re-assessing the relevance of tasks/stories to ensure alignment with agile principles

5. anticipate and address/remove blockers/impediments that the team may encounter so the team can remain focused on its goals

6. negotiate with product owners and stakeholders to protect the team from external influences impacting their ability to meet the agreed goals

7. co-ordinate with other teams as required to manage dependencies and support the team to deliver

8. oversee new starters, ensuring a smooth transition into the team including introducing the social contract

9. help the team manage conflicts and challenges, and play a key role in improving team cohesion, motivation, dynamics and performance

10. create an environment of trust and respect where issues or concerns can be raised safely

11. ensure team adherence to the agreed agile process rules and help the team to remain effective by stepping in to manage conflicts and challenges

12. conduct agile rituals and events and be actively involved in communication and change activities involving stakeholders

13. research agile trends, industry dynamics, frameworks, and tooling to guide and improve the team’s use of agile methodologies

14. build capability within the team through strategies that include coaching and mentoring

15. facilitate teams and enable them to self-manage and self-organise

16. develop and implement changes in workplace practices and business improvement strategies and assist team to transition with change
