SDE II - Embedded, Device Software Team
Posted Updated
Summary
SDE II on Amazon's Ring team building the embedded software behind Ring smart-home security devices: writing C/C++ firmware for Embedded Linux and RTOS, designing hardware/firmware interfaces and IoT protocols, debugging hardware-software issues, and mentoring engineers across the full development lifecycle.
Ring keeps millions of homes safer every day, and the embedded software behind our devices is what makes that possible. As a Software Development Engineer II on the Ring team, you will define, build, and support the system design, architecture, and embedded software that powers Ring products. You will work across the full development lifecycle — from gathering requirements with business and cross-functional engineering teams to designing, implementing, testing, and operating the software that ships to customers. If you enjoy solving hard technical problems at the intersection of hardware and software, and you want your code to run in products people depend on, this role is for you.
Key job responsibilities
- Solve critical design challenges involving algorithms, hardware and firmware interfaces, and IoT protocols, and develop embedded software in C/C++ targeting Embedded Linux and Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) environments.
- Participate in and lead design reviews for complex embedded systems, simulations, and algorithms across your team and partner teams, ensuring technical implementations align with overall system designs.
- Define and refine system requirements and deliver interoperability features, system health monitoring, diagnostics, and self-healing automation capabilities.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase your team's agility across design, automation, development, testing, and operations.
- Mentor fellow engineers through code reviews and knowledge sharing, helping new team members ramp up and raising the quality bar for the software your team owns.
A day in the life
Your work is hands-on and multi-disciplinary. On a given day you might write embedded code, carry out experiments, build a proof-of-concept prototype, or debug a tricky hardware-software interaction. You collaborate closely with hardware engineers, product and program teams, and external engineering partners. Between heads-down coding sessions, expect design discussions, document writing, and mentoring conversations that keep the whole team moving forward.
About the team
Ring's mission is to reduce crime in neighborhoods by offering smart security solutions that are dependable and reliable. Our team builds the embedded software that brings Ring devices to life. We are a fast-paced group that values collaboration, technical rigor, and a genuine commitment to getting things right. We invest in each other's growth through mentorship, inclusive design reviews, and a culture where every voice is heard.
