Security Officer

Position Summary

Provides security services to ensure order, safety, and protection of patients, visitors, team members, and hospital assets. Performs routine patrol, access control, incident response, and customer service duties in a healthcare environment while supporting the organization's mission, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provides escorts for visitors, employees, students, and authorized people upon request.
  • Patrols all areas of the hospital, both interior and exterior, on foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle, 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions, as assigned.
  • Provides key assists and access support for authorized personnel, including in sensitive and restricted areas.
  • Detects suspicious activity and responds appropriately to safety and security concerns.
  • Reports criminal activity, suspicious behavior, and policy violations to leadership and law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Investigates accident scenes, searches for and preserves evidence; investigates and interviews witnesses; makes oral and written reports; responds to varying situations with tact and diplomacy and deals with stressful, hostile or irrational person(s), whether due to physical or mental disability, drugs, or socio-economic differences or other factors and recommends legal action if needed.
  • Assists medical staff with the enforcement of Baker Act (F.S. 394.463) and Marchman Act (F.S. 397.675397.6775) patients with the use of approved medical restraints as requested by physicians under Florida Statutes.
  • Works with law enforcement and correctional officers regarding patient/prisoner intake, supervision, and status during hospitalization.
  • Reports all safety and security hazards or violations throughout the campus.
  • Responds to inbound and outbound helicopter operations by securing the helipad and assisting flight crews with patient movement when needed.
  • Use and understand the operation of walk-through, handheld metal detectors, and X-Ray machines and other assigned security equipment.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with organizational policy and applicable standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Responds to threats or acts of violence involving patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Responds to patient elopement, abduction-related events, person-down calls, emergency intake situations, fire alarms, severe weather events, suspicious packages, bomb threats, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency events.
  • Documents slip/trip/fall incidents and related liability events using event reports and photography, as appropriate.
  • Assist department leaders with security support for sensitive personnel matters, including escorts for terminated employees.
  • May be required to testify in court or other legal proceedings related to incidents occurring in the course of duty.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word for report writing purposes.
  • Training in de-escalation, workplace violence prevention, customer service, and healthcare security practices preferred.
  • No prior security experience required.
  • Experience in healthcare, military, public safety, law enforcement support, corrections, or security-related environments preferred.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and be insurable under the organization’s insurance carrier requirements and standards.
  • Must obtain a State of Florida Class “D” Security Officer License within 90 days of hire and maintain during employment.
  • Must obtain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification within 60 days of hire and maintain annual renewal.
  • Must obtain Basic Security Officer Certification or higher through the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 60 days of hire and maintain during employment.
