Security & Safety Coordinator
Posted Updated
How this role works
For the first 3 months, you’ll be employed by a staffing partner, which handles your pay and benefits during that time. Constellation recruits and selects you, and you’ll work on site with our team and follow our policies.
About the role
This is a full-time, on-site, contract-to-hire role: you’ll start on a 3-month contract, and with intention to convert to a permanent position based on performance. You'll keep Constellation's daily security and safety operations running: badging and visitor access, emergency supplies, routine system checks, and a friendly first answer when anyone has a security or safety question. You'll report to the Senior Security & Safety Specialist, who will train you on our systems and processes. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Key responsibilities
Access and visitor operations
- Issue, update, and deactivate access credentials for staff, hosted researchers, and vendors.
- Support visitor check-in and host notifications.
- Monitor access and visitor activity and escalate anything unusual to the Senior Security & Safety Specialist.
- Coordinate with building security on deliveries, contractor access, and event guest lists.
Safety and emergency readiness
- Inspect and restock first aid, AED, and emergency supplies.
- Keep evacuation maps, floor warden rosters, and emergency contacts current.
- Support drills and onboarding sessions; track attendance and follow-ups.
Systems and records
- Run routine checks on access control and camera systems; open vendor tickets and track them to resolution.
- Keep incident, inspection, and training records current.
- Own small projects and fixes end to end, and ask for help early when you're stuck.
Skills & experience
You may be a good fit if:
- You have experience in facilities, office operations, security, hospitality, or another service role. Entry-level candidates are welcome.
- You learn new software quickly and are comfortable with cloud-based admin tools.
- You are organized, reliable, and calm under pressure, and you notice when something is off.
- You take ownership: you close the loop without being reminded.
- You communicate clearly with everyone from first-time visitors to senior researchers.
- You handle confidential information with discretion.
Nice to have
- First Aid, CPR/AED, or Stop the Bleed certification.
- Experience with cloud-based access control, video, or visitor management systems.
- Experience in a research institution, coworking space, or multi-tenant office.
Practical requirements
- Full time, about 40 hours per week, on site in Berkeley during core business hours, with occasional early, late, or weekend coverage for events and drills.
- All work is done on a Constellation-issued and managed device.
- Able to walk all floors, lift up to 40 lbs, and respond on site during incidents, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Sign a confidentiality agreement before starting.
- Offers are contingent on a background check conducted in compliance with the California Fair Chance Act and ICRAA.
Compensation
During the contract, you’ll be an employee of our staffing partner. This is an hourly, non-exempt role paid $38 to $47 per hour during the 3-month contract. On conversion to a permanent role, pay is $78,000 to $98,000 per year.
During the contract, you’ll accrue paid sick leave. After conversion, you’ll get our full staff benefits, including catered meals, a 401(k) with employer match, employer-paid commuter benefits, and health, dental, and vision insurance.
