Security Technician - Charleston, SC

Position Overview

The Field Technician role within the Operations Department is a comprehensive position focused on the installation, maintenance, and optimization of structured cabling and low-voltage systems. Taking direction from the Foreman, with a formal reporting relationship to the Field Resource Manager, this role is a technical expert and field leader responsible for executing, troubleshooting, and validating complex systems. The position serves as a direct track toward becoming a Foreman.

Role Summary

The Field Technician is responsible for performing structured cabling and low-voltage installations in strict compliance with BICSI standards, project drawings, and company quality requirements. They act as a technical authority on the jobsite, working independently on complex scopes, providing mentorship to junior team members, and supporting quality control to ensure systems perform as designed.

Core Accountabilities

• Technical Execution: Perform and validate advanced technical installations and troubleshooting.

• Quality Assurance: Deliver consistent quality to prevent rework and ensure system performance.

• Leadership & Mentorship: Guide and develop junior technicians while setting the technical standard for the jobsite.

• Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to BICSI standards, safety protocols, and project specifications.

• Documentation: Ensure high accuracy in field documentation and daily time reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Security & Access Control Systems

• Device Installation: Mount and install security cameras and physical access control hardware, including door controllers, card readers, and request-to-exit (REX) sensors, in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards.

• Lock Hardware Integration: Support the installation and wiring of electronic locking hardware such as maglocks and electric strikes, ensuring proper alignment and functional testing.

• System Wiring: Execute precision wiring and termination for security devices, maintaining organized cabling within junction boxes and head-end equipment.

• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all security and access control installations comply with local building codes, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, and Life Safety codes regarding door hardware and emergency egress.

Cabling, Termination & Testing

• Installation: Execute complex routing, precision rack builds, and cable management for copper (Cat 5e, 6, 6A) and fiber optic (single-mode & multimode) systems.

• Termination: Perform and validate advanced terminations for jacks and panels, ensuring they are neat, organized, and meet manufacturer standards.

• Testing & Certification: Conduct and validate certification testing for copper and fiber (OLTS/OTDR), interpret results, and correct any performance deficiencies.

Pathways & Spaces

• Design & Installation: Design and install advanced pathways, including cable tray systems and complex conduit bending/routing.

• Compliance: Ensure proper bend radius, pull tension, and required separation from power systems.

• Firestopping: Understand firestopping requirements and perform installation only where certified.

Quality & Safety Leadership

• Safety Mastery: Lead by example in safety compliance, conduct informal safety checks, and coach others on safe work practices.

• Quality Control: Perform regular spot checks and self-inspections to maintain "inspection-ready" installations and prevent rework.

System Responsibilities

• Fieldwire: Maintain up-to-date task statuses, upload detailed progress photos, and document as-built accuracy or site constraints.

• ConnectWise: Accurately record personal time entries daily and assist in validating labor accuracy if requested.

• Productivity: Model efficient work practices and support overall crew planning to meet project schedules.

Required Qualifications

• Experience: Can range from 1 year of entry level experience to 5+ years of experience in structured cabling or low-voltage systems.

• Technical Skills: Demonstrated competence in Installation, troubleshooting and the ability to read and interpret complex drawings.
