About the Role
As a Senior Analyst within Health New Zealand's Health Planning & Insights team, you'll play a key role in turning data into evidence, insight and action that improves health outcomes for people across Aotearoa New Zealand. This role has a particular focus on supporting the Primary Care Health Target and the development and implementation of the National Primary Care Dataset, two high-profile national initiatives that will strengthen how primary care performance is measured, monitored and improved.
This is an opportunity to work on complex, high-impact analytical projects that inform health service planning, performance improvement, investment, commissioning and strategic decision-making across Health New Zealand. You'll bring together strong analytical expertise, critical thinking and stakeholder engagement to understand what the data is telling us - and, importantly, what we should do about it.
You'll be trusted to deliver robust analysis and compelling insights, identify emerging trends and opportunities, and provide evidence-based advice to senior leaders and stakeholders. You'll also help strengthen analytical practice across the team through peer review, mentoring, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

About you
You're an experienced analyst who enjoys solving complex problems, asking the right questions and translating data into insights that people can use.
To succeed in this role, you'll bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in analytics, data science, statistics, public health, business analysis, business insights or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- At least five years' experience in analytical roles, ideally within a large and complex organisation.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking capability, with the ability to interpret complex information and develop sound, evidence-based recommendations.
- Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to explain and present complex technical information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Experience using data visualisation and analytical techniques to develop meaningful insights, dashboards and reporting.
- Strong understanding of data quality, validation and analytical methodologies, with a commitment to producing trusted and reliable outputs.
- Advanced experience with analytical and business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Qlik, SQL, MS Excel and/or R.
- Experience with BI tools, data visualisation platforms and data warehousing concepts.
- The ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver fit-for-purpose analytical products.
- A proactive approach to identifying opportunities to improve reporting, automation, data quality and analytical efficiency.
- Experience mentoring or supporting the development of other analysts would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of the New Zealand health sector and government environment is desirable.
- Experience in putting Te Tiriti o Waitangi into action and applying an equity lens to your work is highly valued.
