Senior Android Cuttlefish Platform Engineer
Description
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Android Cuttlefish Platform Engineer to design, deploy, scale, and manage Android virtual device environments using Android Cuttlefish, Google's configurable Android virtual device platform. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with AOSP, virtualization technologies, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD automation, and large-scale Android testing environments. Android Cuttlefish is designed to provide high-fidelity Android virtual devices for development, testing, and validation across local and cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and maintain scalable Android Cuttlefish environments for Android platform development and testing.
- Scale Android virtual device farms across cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
- Build and manage automated testing pipelines using CI/CD tools.
- Deploy and orchestrate multiple Cuttlefish instances using Kubernetes, Docker, or cloud-native platforms.
- Integrate Android virtual devices with automated regression, integration, performance, and compatibility testing frameworks.
- Support AOSP build, customization, and validation activities.
- Configure and optimize virtualization technologies including KVM, QEMU, and Linux environments.
- Monitor system performance, resource utilization, and test execution metrics.
- Troubleshoot Android platform, networking, virtualization, and infrastructure issues.
- Develop automation scripts using Python, Shell, or Go for environment provisioning and lifecycle management.
- Collaborate with Android developers, QA teams, DevOps engineers, and product stakeholders.
- Cuttlefish Deployment & Scaling: Build, configure, and scale thousands of Android Cuttlefish instances on cloud platforms.
- Infrastructure Automation: Containerize Cuttlefish environments using Docker and orchestrate them at scale with Kubernetes (K8s).
- AOSP Customization: Modify, compile, and maintain the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for various virtual form factors (Mobile, Automotive, Tablets).
- Hypervisor Management: Configure and optimize virtual hardware peripherals (Camera, Audio, Bluetooth, GPS) using crosvm or QEMU via VirtIO drivers.
Technical Skills
- 5+ years of experience in Android platform engineering, DevOps, cloud infrastructure, or virtualization.
- Android Platform & AOSP: Strong experience with Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Android Cuttlefish, Android Emulator technologies, Android internal architecture, Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), and AOSP Build System (Soong, Blueprint, Make).
- Linux & Virtualization: Deep expertise in Linux Administration, Linux Internals, Linux Kernel concepts, KVM, QEMU, Virtual Machines, and virtualization technologies.
- Hypervisors & Device Virtualization: Hands-on experience with crosvm, QEMU, VirtIO drivers, and Android virtual device environments.
- Cloud & Containerization: Strong experience with Docker, Kubernetes (K8s), and cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Programming & Automation: Proficiency in Python, C++, Bash/Shell scripting, and preferably Go or Rust for automation and platform engineering.
- DevOps & CI/CD: Experience with CI/CD tools including Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and Azure DevOps.
- Source Control: Strong knowledge of Git and version control best practices.
- Debugging & Troubleshooting: Expertise in ADB (Android Debug Bridge), system log analysis, Android platform debugging, performance tuning, and troubleshooting WebRTC streaming environments.
- Automation & Testing: Experience building and scaling Android test environments, device farms, automated testing frameworks, and cloud-based validation platforms.
- Infrastructure & Scalability: Experience designing, deploying, and managing large-scale Android virtual device environments supporting development, testing, and CI/CD workloads.
- Experience managing large-scale Android testing infrastructure.
- Knowledge of ADB, Android debugging, and platform validation workflows.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Android Automotive OS (AAOS).
- Knowledge of device farm architectures.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible).
- Exposure to observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, or Splunk.
Use Cases the Candidate Will Support
- Android OS validation and testing at scale.
- AOSP custom build verification.
- Enterprise Android device farm management.
- CI/CD-driven Android platform testing.
