Senior Android Engineer - Core Experience, Soul

We are looking for a contractor to join our team Soul in Core Experience. In Soul, you will have the opportunity not only to build the messaging experience in the app — where millions of listeners chat about music with their friends, sharing songs, reactions and images — but also to maintain and evolve the social platform behind it and its APIs, enabling users to find and connect with each other through profiles, usernames and friending. Alongside that, you will have an impact on surfaces like friend activity and Jam Listen Along when it comes to improving the experience, maintaining them, and supporting bandmates.

As it's natural because of the set of products and systems owned by Soul, we are mostly working on one of the highest priority company initiatives — and often we build new stuff, we prototype and experiment, measuring every change against guardrails for the core listening experience. Therefore, you will work closely with product managers, design, insights, data scientists and our trust & safety partners, and possibly have the opportunity to lead projects that require cross-team collaboration.

What you'll do

• Collaborate within our team of Android, iOS and Backend engineers, designers, data scientists and our product manager to continuously experiment, iterate, and deliver on new product objectives.

• Build groundbreaking Android features that help millions of users connect with their friends through music — in chat, through friend activity, and on their profiles.

• Evolve our client messaging architecture so conversations stay in sync in near real time on Android — within tight battery, network and performance budgets.

• Write clear, maintainable code that will scale across a number of projects and distributed development teams, ensuring quality solutions.

• Contribute to our team processes to make sure we continue improving them and adapting to current needs.

• Help drive performance improvements, testing, and tooling to improve data and systems quality.

Who you are

• You are a Senior Android Engineer with 8+ years of Android development experience.

• You have experience with agentic tools, and are an engineer who adopts agentic-first development. Having prior experience with agentic tools like Claude and Cursor is crucial.

• You understand how mobile applications connect with backend systems end-to-end, and what it takes to keep conversations in sync in near real time within battery, network and performance budgets.

• You care about building safe experiences — privacy, moderation and abuse prevention are design inputs, not afterthoughts.

• Having some working experience with C++ or iOS development is a plus, as you may occasionally build features that span across platforms and codebases.
