XE | Christchurch or Auckland | Hybrid
XE are growing their technology team and are looking for a Senior Back End Engineer to help build and modernise the systems behind a global payments and foreign exchange platform.
XE supports consumers and businesses across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US, helping them collect, convert, hold, and send money across international markets. The business has global scale through Euronet Worldwide, but the team is still small enough for engineers to have real ownership, influence, and visibility across the work they deliver.
The role
This is a hands-on senior backend engineering role working on the services, APIs, data flows, integrations, and production systems that support XE’s cross-border payments products.
You’ll be joining XE during a key stage of technology growth and platform modernisation. The business is rebuilding core platform capability across corporate and consumer products, and the NZ team is playing an important role in that work.
You’ll work closely with product, compliance, operations, architects, team leads, and other engineers to turn complex requirements into reliable, well-designed backend systems. The role is internal-facing rather than client-facing, but you’ll need to communicate clearly, contribute to technical decisions, and help raise engineering standards within your domain.
XE is also moving strongly into AI-assisted engineering. Tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar are part of how the team builds, tests, documents, and ships software. This role will suit someone who is already using AI tools in a practical way, or who has a strong view on how they can be used responsibly in modern software delivery.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be involved in:
Designing, building, and owning backend services that support payments, FX, onboarding, settlement, KYC/KYB, and multi-currency flows
Developing APIs, integrations, and service layers used across XE’s platform
Working with C#/.NET and related backend technologies
Designing data models and working with SQL and relational databases
Building and supporting cloud-based services on AWS
Contributing to CI/CD, deployment practices, automated testing, and production readiness
Owning production health across your domain, including reliability, observability, incident response, and continuous improvement
Helping modernise legacy systems into XE’s newer platform architecture
Leading design reviews and contributing to architecture decisions
Mentoring intermediate engineers and supporting stronger engineering practice across the team
Using AI-assisted development tools as part of your everyday workflow
What we’re looking for
You do not need to tick every box, but you will likely bring:
Strong backend software engineering experience in production environments
Solid experience with C#/.NET, or another object-oriented backend language such as Java, Kotlin, or Go
Good SQL and relational database fundamentals
Experience designing and building APIs, services, and integrations
Strong understanding of system design and architecture
Experience with service-oriented, microservices, or event-driven systems
Exposure to AWS and modern cloud deployment practices
Experience writing and maintaining automated tests
Confidence working with CI/CD pipelines and production release processes
A practical approach to reliability, observability, and production support
Experience contributing to technical direction, design reviews, and mentoring
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Genuine comfort using AI-assisted development tools as part of modern engineering delivery
Experience in payments, foreign exchange, banking, fintech, insurance, or another regulated environment would be useful, but it is not essential.
Experience with ledgers, financial data systems, partner integrations, platform migrations, caching tools such as Redis or Memcached, Jira, Confluence, Postman, or Bruno would also be valuable.
Why this role is worth considering
This is a strong opportunity for a senior backend engineer who wants:
Complex backend product and platform work, not just feature delivery
Exposure to global payments, FX, and regulated financial systems
A role with ownership of architecture, services, data, reliability, and production outcomes
The chance to help modernise a platform used across multiple international markets
A NZ-based engineering team with global reach
A modern AI-assisted development environment
A role where senior engineers are expected to influence, mentor, and stay close to the code
Working arrangement
The role is based in XE’s Christchurch or Auckland office with a hybrid working model. Alternatively, there is an option to work out of the Auckland office in a hybrid arrangement also.
You’ll work with local colleagues as well as global teams across XE’s wider technology function. Because XE operates internationally, there may occasionally be calls or collaboration with teams in other regions.
Benefits
XE offers:
Competitive salary
KiwiSaver employer contributions on top of salary

Extra annual leave for each year of service, up to five additional days
