Senior Backend Engineer

Position Summary: We’re looking for a Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS) in Bangalore to develop scalable backend services, integrations and APIs using TypeScript, Node.js, Java, Perl, GraphQL, REST APIs, and cloud-native engineering practices. This role will contribute to building scalable clinical data platforms that bring information from multiple backend systems into reliable, reusable APIs for product teams.
The role combines strong backend/platform engineering expertise with AI-assisted engineering practices, including the use of LLMs, AI coding tools, prompt patterns, retrieval-based approaches, and human-in-the-loop validation to improve software development, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and developer productivity.
About the Team: The Clinical Foundations zone builds core services and graph capabilities that enable clinical applications to access consistent, timely, and trusted clinical data. The team works across multiple clinical and workflow domains, including: Patient, Encounter, Orders, Results, Documents, Care Plan, Medication, Questionnaire, Task & Related clinical workflow domains
As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, you will contribute to the engineering foundations and execution details that help clinical data workflows perform well, scale effectively, and remain dependable in production.
You will work closely with product, design, QA, architecture, platform, and engineering teams to translate requirements into well-structured software solutions while supporting issue resolution, code quality, AI-assisted engineering practices, and incremental platform improvements.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Develop backend services and integrations using TypeScript, Node.js, Java, Perl, GraphQL, REST APIs, and cloud-native engineering practices.
- Design and build GraphQL APIs, including schemas, resolvers, data sources, and federated subgraph services, to make clinical data available to product teams in a reliable and scalable way.
- Integrate with clinical source systems, including FHIR APIs, microservices, event streams, and internal data platforms.
- Apply AI engineering practices to improve code understanding, schema mapping, test generation, documentation, troubleshooting, and developer productivity.
- Evaluate and use LLMs, AI coding tools, prompt patterns, retrieval-based approaches, and human-in-the-loop validation where appropriate.
- Optimize backend data access patterns for latency, batching, caching, error handling, reliability, and maintainability.
- Collaborate with product, architecture, platform, QA, and application teams to define stable API contracts and deliver high-quality software solutions.
- Write and maintain unit, integration, regression, and contract tests to support safe delivery and production stability.
- Support deployment, monitoring, debugging, and incident response for services running in AWS, Kubernetes, and CI/CD environments.

- Contribute to incremental improvements in the clinical data platform, backend services, APIs, and engineering foundations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production and application issues while maintaining system reliability and performance.
- Participate in technical discussions, architecture reviews, and solution design with cross-functional engineering partners.
- Support code quality, maintainability, scalability, and production readiness across backend services.
- Help establish and maintain reliable and reusable API contracts for product teams.
- Contribute to AI-assisted engineering practices and identify opportunities to improve developer productivity through AI and automation.
- Work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders to translate business and product requirements into well-structured software solutions.
Expected Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4–6 years of professional software engineering experience with strong backend or platform engineering depth.
- Hands-on experience with TypeScript, Node.js, Java, Perl, GraphQL, REST APIs, Oracle, and jOOQ.
- Strong experience in production service development, backend systems, APIs, and integrations.
- Experience designing and developing GraphQL schemas, resolvers, data sources, and federated subgraph services.
- Experience with healthcare data, FHIR, clinical workflows, or large-scale data integration is strongly preferred.
- Practical experience using AI tools or LLM-based workflows for software engineering, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, or operational support.
- Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD, microservices, event streams, and cloud-native engineering practices.
- Strong understanding of backend performance and reliability concepts, including latency, batching, caching, error handling, scalability, and maintainability.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
