Senior Backend Engineer, Cloud Cost & Capacity
Summary
Senior backend engineer (based in India, remote-first) who will found a new cloud cost & capacity engineering capability: building backend services, BigQuery data pipelines, and internal dashboards that turn GCP billing and GKE usage data into cost attribution, forecasting, and capacity-planning insights. Core stack: SQL, Go/Python, GCP, Kubernetes, OpenCost.
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer, Cloud Cost & Capacity based in India.
We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design and build innovative solutions that optimize cloud infrastructure costs, resource utilization, and capacity planning. In this role, you will develop backend services, data pipelines, and internal applications that transform cloud billing and usage data into actionable insights. You will play a key role in helping engineering teams understand infrastructure consumption, allocate costs accurately, and anticipate future capacity requirements. As the first dedicated engineer in this area, you will establish the technical foundations, architecture, and engineering standards that will support future growth. Working closely with Finance, infrastructure engineers, product teams, and service owners, you will turn complex business needs into scalable technical solutions. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of a new engineering capability in a collaborative, remote-first environment while leveraging AI to improve development efficiency.
Accountabilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain production-grade backend services and internal software solutions supporting cloud cost visibility, resource attribution, and infrastructure capacity planning.
- Build data pipelines that process Google Cloud billing exports and Cloud Monitoring telemetry, transforming raw information into structured, queryable datasets using BigQuery.
- Develop cost attribution models that accurately distribute shared infrastructure expenses and resource consumption across Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) clusters, teams, and services.
- Leverage tools and frameworks such as OpenCost and GKE cost allocation to improve infrastructure cost transparency and resource accountability.
- Design and implement capacity planning and demand forecasting tools that analyze infrastructure requirements by machine family and geographic region.
- Support cloud reservation planning and develop solutions that help anticipate resource constraints, prevent capacity shortages, and optimize infrastructure utilization.
- Build internal applications and dashboards that enable engineers, service owners, and budget stakeholders to monitor, understand, and manage their cloud usage and spending.
- Replace manual reporting processes, spreadsheets, and static snapshots with automated, scalable, and reliable software solutions.
- Establish the technical architecture, data models, backend services, and engineering standards that will serve as the foundation for future development and team expansion.
- Take ownership of technical direction, contribute to future hiring decisions, and help shape the evolution of the cloud cost and capacity engineering capability.
- Collaborate with Finance, product teams, service owners, and infrastructure engineers to gather requirements and translate operational challenges into effective technical designs.
- Incorporate AI-powered tools and assistants into daily engineering workflows to improve productivity, accelerate problem-solving, and deliver better engineering outcomes.
- Communicate progress, technical decisions, and implementation proposals clearly within a distributed, asynchronous working environment.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Senior Backend Engineer or Software Engineer, with a strong track record of designing, developing, and delivering production backend systems end to end.
- Strong SQL skills and practical experience working with large datasets, including the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines and data models.
- Experience handling cloud infrastructure billing, usage, and resource consumption data, with the ability to transform complex datasets into meaningful insights.
- Working knowledge of at least one major cloud platform, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including compute services, Kubernetes, and cloud pricing and billing models.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language used for backend development, tooling, and automation. Experience with Go or Python is particularly relevant, while Ruby familiarity is also beneficial.
- Experience designing and implementing scalable backend services and data processing solutions, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Ability to independently break down complex or ambiguous technical challenges into manageable milestones and drive projects from initial design through production deployment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify optimization opportunities and make data-driven technical decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders in remote and asynchronous environments.
- A proactive and ownership-oriented mindset, with the ability to establish technical foundations, work independently, and contribute to long-term engineering strategy.
Additional experience considered an advantage:
- Experience with cloud cost management and optimization tools such as OpenCost, Kubecost, or Google Kubernetes Engine cost allocation.
- Knowledge of FinOps principles, cloud financial management practices, or relevant FinOps certifications.
- Experience with cloud cost modeling, infrastructure capacity planning, demand forecasting, or anomaly detection.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform.
- Experience with data visualization and monitoring platforms such as Looker, Looker Studio, or Grafana.
- Previous experience as a founding engineer or in establishing a new engineering capability from the ground up.
- Experience incorporating AI-powered tools, coding assistants, or agent-based workflows into software engineering processes.
Benefits:
- Flexible Paid Time Off: Enjoy flexible paid leave to support personal commitments, rest, and work-life balance.
- Remote Work: Benefit from a remote-first working environment, with location-based eligibility requirements applicable to the position.
- Equity Compensation: Access equity compensation and an employee stock purchase plan.
- Professional Development: Receive a dedicated growth and development fund to support continuous learning and career advancement.
- Parental Leave: Benefit from parental leave policies designed to support employees and their families.
- Health and Well-being: Access resources and programs supporting your physical, mental, and financial well-being.
- Employee Resource Groups: Participate in team member resource groups that encourage diversity, inclusion, and meaningful connections.
- Global Collaboration: Work alongside talented professionals across international teams in an asynchronous and documentation-driven environment.
- Inclusive Workplace: Join an equal-opportunity organization that values diversity, transparency, collaboration, and individual contributions.
