Senior Backend Engineer – Distributed Systems & AI Platform
Summary
Build and operate durable workflows in Temporal for SOFICO’s Miles platform, ensuring reliable, auditable business-critical processes across mobility leasing and fleet operations.
Why SOFICO?
At SOFICO, we’re shaping the future of mobility — and we’re doing it together. Our software, Miles, is a leading platform that enables companies worldwide to manage their leasing, fleet and mobility operations in one integrated system.
Now we're expanding our Data & AI organisation and building the SOFICO AI Cloud, the platform underpinning the Miles Enterprise Agentic Platform.
From our office in Ghent, we're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the distributed workflow platform connecting our enterprise software with the next generation of AI-powered capabilities.
You'll solve a particularly interesting engineering challenge: how do you make complex, long-running business processes continue reliably when services fail, networks go down or individual steps need to be retried?
You'll use technologies such as Temporal, Java/Quarkus and Python to make these processes reliable, observable and scalable.
What you'll do...
- Build reliable distributed workflows that coordinate business-critical processes across Miles and the SOFICO AI Cloud.
- Design systems that remain reliable when things go wrong, using techniques such as retries, idempotency, failure recovery and compensating actions.
- Develop integrations between our workflow platform, Java/Quarkus services, AI components and enterprise systems.
- Build strong testing, monitoring and observability around long-running business processes.
- Help shape the engineering standards and architecture of a new platform at the intersection of backend engineering, distributed systems and Agentic AI.
What you bring...
- Strong professional experience in backend software engineering, ideally with Java or another modern backend language.
- Experience building distributed, asynchronous or event-driven systems in production.
- A good understanding of how to design reliable systems around failures, retries, state and transactions.
- Experience with microservices, APIs and automated testing.
Earn bonus points for...
- Experience with Temporal, Camunda, Conductor, Azure Durable Functions or another workflow/orchestration technology.
- Experience with Java/Quarkus, Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar event-driven technologies.
- Experience with AI platforms, LangGraph, cloud platforms or enterprise/on-premise environments.
What’s in it for you...
- Competitive salary package;
- Meal allowance provided per working day;
- Company car or mobility budget
- Fully covered private health insurance, so you can focus on what matters most;
- Hybrid working and flexible hours, giving you the freedom to shape your workday;
- A modern co-working space offering a comfortable working environment;
- From day one, you’ll be supported through a structured onboarding program, with guidance from a dedicated coach to help you get up to speed and grow in your role;
- And because strong teams go beyond day-to-day work, we regularly create opportunities to connect — from casual drinks to team activities and company-wide events.
Ready to build the reliable workflow foundation behind the next generation of mobility software? Join SOFICO and let’s shape what’s next together!
