As a Senior Backend Engineer within Enterprise Engineering, you will be part of a team building internal and enterprise-facing software tools that serve the bank's internal staff, partners, and clients. This includes developing andmaintainingcore banking systems, merchantacquiringplatforms, and other internal banking applications. About the Role:
Lead, develop andmaintainscalable and reliable microservices powering core banking systems, merchantacquiringplatforms, and internal banking applications.
Drivetechnical decision-making on backend architecture, ensuring systems are performant, secure, and capable of handling high-demand production scenarios.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, drive engineering best practices, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement across Enterprise Engineering.
What You'll Do:
Design and develop distributed systems and microservices, primarily using Java and Spring Boot with REST APIs and messaging systems.
Designand implement event-driven systems using Kafka to enable seamless communication between services.
Build andmaintainbackend services that underpin core banking systems, merchantacquiringplatforms, and internal banking applications.
Ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability of backend services in production environments.
Lead technical projects and make architectural and design decisions aligned with business goals and engineering best practices.
Design and manage data models across relational (PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases.
Develop and consumeinternal/externalAPIs of varying complexity, ensuring robust service contracts and backward compatibility.
Designcontainerisedapplications using Docker and manage orchestration with Kubernetes.
AI Coding Tools:
Leverage AI coding tools(e.g.ILMU, Claude,GitHub Copilot)productivelyfor backend development, test generation, and code reviewassistance.
Apply critical engineering judgement tovalidate, refine, and take full ownership of AI-generated code before integration.
Testing & Quality:
Achieve meaningful unit and integration test coverage across backend services.
Participate actively in peer code reviews, providing and receiving constructive technical feedback.
Contribute to CI/CD quality gates and ensure services meet performance and security standards before release.
CI/CD & DevOps:
Manage own CI/CD pipeline contributions,configure build steps, run automated tests, and troubleshoot pipeline failures.
Follow Git branching strategies and raise well-structured pull requests with clear context and test evidence.
Work closely with productowners, frontend engineers, QA teams, andLeadengineers within Enterprise Engineering to clarify requirements and deliver features end-to-end.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and growth.
Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog grooming sessions.
Documentation:
Produce andmaintaintechnical documentation for backend services, APIs, and data models.
Contribute to Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and engineering runbooks.
What We're Seeking:
Malaysian citizen (holder of a valid MyKad).
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent work experience with relevant professional certifications.
Minimum 5 years of hands-on backend software development experience, witha track recordof delivering production-grade systems.
Strongproficiencyin Java and object-oriented programming (OOP) principles. Familiarity with other OOP languages is an advantage.
Solid experience with Spring Boot for building microservices and RESTful APIs.
Solid understanding of messaging systems, particularly Kafka or equivalent event streaming platforms.
Hands-on experience with both relational databases (PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases.
Experience designing and consuming web APIs of reasonable complexity, including versioning and backward compatibility.
Hands-on experience withcontainerisedapplications using Docker and Kubernetes.
Productive user of at least one AI coding tool(e.g.ILMU, Claude,GitHub Copilot); applies engineering judgement tovalidateAI-generated output.
Solidunderstanding of software security principles and performanceoptimisationfor high-load backend services.
Good communicationand interpersonal skills for effective cross-functional collaboration within Enterprise Engineering.
Familiarity with digital banking, core banking systems, or financial technology applications is an advantage.
