The Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll design, build, and operate reliable backend services that power our platform. You’ll work across APIs, distributed systems, data models, integrations, and performance, helping shape our transition to a modern Cloudflare Edge architecture.
You’ll collaborate closely with product, frontend, DevOps, and integration teams to deliver secure, scalable, and well-tested services. You’ll also contribute to technical direction, engineering standards, and pragmatic decisions that support long-term platform growth.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build backend services: Develop production-grade services and APIs using TypeScript, Node.js, and Hono across Cloudflare Workers and related platform services.
- Own features end-to-end: Translate product requirements into technical designs, implementation plans, tested code, documentation, and production-ready releases.
- Build distributed systems: Work with Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, D1, KV, R2, and Postgres to deliver reliable, low-latency, multi-brand platform capabilities.
- Design robust APIs: Create clear REST APIs, asynchronous workflows, webhooks, and service interfaces with appropriate validation, versioning, authentication, and authorisation.
- Ensure reliability and performance: Apply idempotency, retries, queuing, caching, concurrency control, and other resilience patterns to maintain consistent behaviour at scale.
- Manage data and persistence: Design schemas, migrations, queries, and data access patterns while maintaining data integrity and supporting efficient reporting and operations.
- Maintain engineering quality: Write unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end tests; participate in code reviews; and improve development standards and tooling.
- Support production systems: Investigate incidents, improve observability, participate in root-cause analysis, and contribute to monitoring, alerting, and operational documentation.
- Collaborate across teams: Work effectively with frontend, DevOps, product, and partner-facing teams to deliver cohesive solutions and unblock delivery.
What You’ll Bring
➡️ 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience with ownership of production systems.
➡️ Strong TypeScript and Node.js skills, with experience building maintainable, well-tested backend applications.
➡️ Experience designing and implementing REST APIs, webhooks, asynchronous workflows, and distributed services.
➡️ Solid understanding of relational databases, data modelling, SQL, migrations, and Postgres.
➡️ Practical knowledge of reliability patterns including idempotency, retries, timeouts, rate limiting, caching, and failure handling.
➡️ Experience with automated testing, code review, CI/CD, observability, and production incident resolution.
➡️ Ability to make pragmatic architectural decisions and communicate technical trade-offs clearly.
➡️ Excellent collaboration skills and a proactive approach to solving complex problems in a remote environment.
Nice to Have
⭐ Hands-on experience with Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, D1, KV, or R2.
⭐ Experience with edge computing, serverless platforms, event-driven architecture, or real-time systems.
⭐ Familiarity with Hono, OpenAPI, API gateways, queues, or internal SDK development.
⭐ Experience working with payments, transactional systems, reconciliation, or other domains requiring strong data consistency.
⭐ Experience supporting migration from a monolithic Laravel PHP / AWS application to distributed services.
⭐ Familiarity with Go or other backend programming languages.
