This is a hands-on engineering role for someone with strong expertise in Java, AWS, Kubernetes, and distributed microservices architectures, combined with an end-to-end ownership mindset.
You will be responsible for designing, developing, deploying, monitoring, and supporting backend services throughout their entire lifecycle. You will also contribute to architectural decisions, engineering standards, and continuous improvements across the team.
We are looking for an independent engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, proactively improving systems, and taking responsibility for the reliability and performance of the services they build.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and operate scalable backend services and microservices using Java.
- Build and maintain cloud-native applications running on AWS and Kubernetes/EKS.
- Take end-to-end ownership of services, from technical design and development to deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
- Design reliable, scalable solutions within distributed microservices architectures.
- Work with DynamoDB, Amazon SQS, and other AWS services supporting distributed and asynchronous workloads.
- Implement and maintain monitoring, logging, and observability solutions using tools such as Datadog and Splunk.
- Investigate and resolve production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive incidents through resolution.
- Participate in a shared on-call rotation to support production services.
- Contribute to architecture discussions, technical decisions, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.
- Collaborate asynchronously with engineers and partner teams across multiple countries and time zones.
- Promote high engineering standards and take accountability for the quality and operational stability of delivered solutions.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development.
- Advanced hands-on experience with Java and production-grade backend systems.
- Strong experience developing and operating cloud-native applications on AWS.
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes/EKS or equivalent container orchestration technologies.
- Proven experience designing, developing, and operating microservices and distributed systems at scale.
- Experience working with NoSQL databases, ideally DynamoDB or equivalent technologies.
- Experience with messaging systems and asynchronous architectures, preferably Amazon SQS or comparable solutions.
- Experience implementing and using production monitoring, logging, and observability tools, such as Datadog, Splunk, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience owning production services, including troubleshooting, incident response, and on-call support.
- Ability to contribute to system design and architectural decisions at a senior engineering level.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in distributed engineering teams.
- High degree of autonomy, accountability, and ownership throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Must be currently based in Costa Rica, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, or Mexico.
