Senior Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer based in Canada.

This is a senior engineering opportunity to help establish the technical foundation of a brand-new, highly visible SaaS application.
You will play a key role in shaping architecture, engineering standards, and foundational backend capabilities that will support the product as it scales.
The role combines advanced backend development with an AI-first engineering approach, including agentic AI workflows and modern development tooling.
You will build cloud-native services using C#/.NET, Event Sourcing, CQRS, Domain-Driven Design, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Docker, and AWS.
Beyond implementation, you will contribute to technical direction, mentor engineers, and help establish practices for a high-performing development team.
The environment emphasizes ownership, automation, quality, rapid iteration, and the practical application of AI throughout the development lifecycle.
This is a fully remote role in Canada, offering the opportunity to make foundational technical decisions on a new product from the beginning.

• Own major components of a new SaaS platform from initial design through production, taking responsibility for technical decisions, implementation, delivery, and ongoing operation.
• Design and build event-sourced, CQRS-based backend services using C# and .NET, applying Domain-Driven Design principles to create maintainable and scalable domain models.
• Design clean domain models, message contracts, and integration patterns using asynchronous messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ.
• Develop cloud-ready backend solutions using Docker and AWS, with a strong focus on deployment, observability, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.
• Apply an AI-first approach to software engineering by using agentic AI tools, automated workflows, code generation and review, automated test generation, and other productivity accelerators.
• Partner with product and engineering leadership to define architecture, technical standards, engineering practices, and delivery approaches for the new platform.
• Produce high-quality, well-tested, maintainable code while contributing to code reviews, technical discussions, mentoring, and continuous improvement across the engineering team.

Requirements:

• Senior-level professional experience building and operating production systems using C# and .NET, with strong software engineering fundamentals.
• Practical, hands-on experience implementing Event Sourcing and CQRS in real-world production systems, with an understanding of their architectural trade-offs and applications.
• Strong working knowledge of Domain-Driven Design (DDD), including domain modeling and the design of maintainable service boundaries.
• Experience with Vertical Slice Architecture or comparable approaches for creating modular and well-defined service boundaries.
• Solid experience working with PostgreSQL and designing data solutions for production applications.
• Experience with asynchronous messaging and distributed integration patterns, ideally using RabbitMQ or a comparable messaging platform.
• Hands-on experience containerizing and deploying services using Docker and building or operating cloud-hosted applications, preferably on AWS.
• Practical experience using AI tools to accelerate software development, combined with an AI-first mindset and willingness to incorporate AI into everyday engineering workflows.
• Familiarity with agentic AI concepts, including autonomous workflows, tool-using agents, orchestration, evaluation, and guardrails.
• Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to take responsibility for what you build, improve systems continuously, operate production services, and provide technical leadership.
• Experience with MartenDB or Wolverine is considered an advantage.
• Experience designing multi-tenant SaaS platforms, including authentication, billing, tenant isolation, scalability, and observability, is a strong plus.
• Familiarity with modern DevOps and infrastructure-as-code practices, such as Terraform or CDK, as well as CI/CD and distributed tracing, is an additional advantage.

Benefits:

• Competitive salary range of CAD $130,000–$170,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
