Senior Backend Engineer – Kotlin, Terraform, IaC, AKS
Role: Sr. Backend Engineer Location: Toronto- Hybrid: 3 days a week onsite (Tuesday-Thursday) Primary Skill Set • Infrastructure as Code (IaC) / InfraOps • Terraform • Kotlin Job Description We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with strong expertise in Kotlin-based backend development and hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure automation and Infrastructure Operations (InfraOps). The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building scalable backend services while enabling highly automated, cloud-native platforms through Infrastructure as Code practices. Technical Skills • Strong Experience with Infrastructure Operations (InfraOps) tools and practices, such as: • Terraform Cloud/Enterprise • Azure DevOps • GitHub Actions • Jenkins • Ansible • Kubernetes • Helm • ArgoCD or similar GitOps tools • Hands-on experience with Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC), including provisioning and managing cloud resources. • Good to have proficiency in Kotlin, with additional experience in Java (Spring Boot, Spring Security) and JavaScript/Node.js. • 7 to 8+ years of backend software engineering experience designing and developing scalable, resilient, and secure applications. • Strong experience building and maintaining REST APIs, Microservices, Event-Driven Architectures, and integration services. • Experience with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and containerized application deployment. • Strong understanding of cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure. • Experience implementing and supporting CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment strategies. • Hands-on experience with JUnit, Cucumber, BDD, and automated testing frameworks. • Familiarity with observability and operational tooling such as logging, monitoring, and alerting solutions. Development Practices • Strong understanding of Agile, DevOps, GitOps, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles. • Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD), Continuous Integration, and Continuous Delivery. • Ability to collaborate across development, platform engineering, and infrastructure teams. • Experience driving engineering best practices, code quality standards, and platform automation initiatives. Additional Skills • Experience designing secure, scalable cloud-native architectures. • Exposure to open-source technologies and cloud-native ecosystems. • Ability to evaluate emerging technologies and create proof-of-concepts to improve engineering productivity and platform reliability. • Strong communication and mentoring skills, with experience supporting and guiding junior engineers. Preferred Qualifications • Experience with Azure networking, security, and cloud governance. • Knowledge of container security, secrets management, and infrastructure compliance practices. • Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform, or cloud-related certifications are considered an asset. |
