Job Description

The team is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build and maintain secure, scalable and high-performing systems that power our core payments platform. The ideal candidate is technically strong, solutions-focused and experienced in building reliable financial systems using modern backend technologies, cloud-native architectures and engineering best practices.

The client is an Australian Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) platform that enables organisations to launch and manage payment solutions, digital wallets, and accounts quickly and securely. Our API-first, modular architecture supports a range of embedded finance solutions, from digital banking to enterprise expense management, with capabilities including real-time ledgering, Australian payment rail integrations and compliance services.

As they continue to expand their multi-tenant platform and regional capabilities, this role will play a critical part in delivering new payment capabilities, strengthening platform reliability and supporting complex financial integrations. You will take ownership of features from technical design through to production, collaborate across distributed teams and contribute to the ongoing evolution of our engineering practices and architecture.

Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will:

• Design, build and maintain secure, scalable and reliable backend services supporting core payment capabilities, including wallets, ledgers, pay-ins, payouts, direct debits, cards, foreign exchange (FX) and fees.
• Take end-to-end ownership of features, from technical design and development through testing, deployment and production support.
• Develop technical solution designs, translating business and product requirements into clear development tasks, and contribute to architectural decisions that balance performance, security, scalability and maintainability.
• Contribute to the evolution of our multi-tenant and regional platform capabilities, ensuring tenant isolation, data security, configuration-driven functionality and support for market-specific payment requirements.
• Develop and maintain integrations with banks, payment processors, card issuers, KYC providers and other third-party financial services.
• Design and maintain event-driven systems, ensuring reliable transaction processing, idempotency, error handling and recovery.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers and product owners to assess technical feasibility, define requirements and deliver scalable solutions.
• Conduct code reviews and develop automated tests to ensure software quality, transaction integrity, security and confidence in production releases.
• Support incident investigation, root cause analysis and resolution of production issues, including third-party integration failures.
• Contribute to performance optimisation, database design and the ongoing reliability of cloud-native applications.
• Champion secure engineering practices, including least-privilege access, sensitive data protection and secure API design.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools and emerging AI-enabled engineering practices to improve productivity, code quality, testing and documentation, while maintaining appropriate security controls and human oversight.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, CI/CD pipelines, tooling and documentation to support agile delivery and DevOps practices.
• Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, knowledge sharing and technical guidance.

All About You

The ideal candidate for this position should:

• Have 5+ years of backend development experience, with strong proficiency in modern backend programming languages, frameworks and production systems.
• Have experience developing financial systems within payments, banking or fintech, with an understanding of ledgers, reconciliation, settlement, idempotency and fail-safe transaction processing.
• Demonstrate strong relational database experience, including schema design, safe database migrations, query optimisation and data integrity.
• Have experience designing asynchronous and event-driven systems, including queues, retries, webhooks and at-least-once message delivery.
• Be experienced in integrating third-party financial APIs, including managing sandbox environments, error handling and integration failure scenarios.
• Have hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, containerised applications, infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipelines.
• Understand and apply secure development principles, including multi-tenant data isolation, least-privilege access and protection of sensitive information.
• Demonstrate experience designing backend services and integrations, making architectural trade-offs and documenting technical decisions through solution designs or architecture decision records (ADRs).
• Demonstrate practical experience using AI-assisted development tools for coding, debugging, testing and documentation, applying appropriate engineering judgement, security controls and human oversight.
• Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills, with the ability to identify technical risks, plan development activities and manage competing priorities.
• Show initiative, ownership and accountability for delivering high-quality, maintainable software.
• Communicate clearly in written and spoken English and collaborate effectively across distributed teams working within Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) hours.
• Show a genuine interest in mentoring, knowledge sharing and contributing to continuous engineering improvement.

Desirable capabilities / Skills

• Experience with our technology stack, including TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, Nx monorepo, Prisma, PostgreSQL, BullMQ/Redis, AWS (EKS, Lambda, SAM), Terraform, Rust, GitHub Actions and Datadog.
• Experience with Australian payment systems, including NPP/PayID, BECS, BPAY and PayTo.
• Experience with card issuing, foreign exchange (FX) and cross-border payment platforms.
• Understanding of KYC/KYB, AML/CTF obligations, fraud prevention and transaction monitoring.
• Experience developing and testing multi-tenant SaaS platforms, regional deployments and configuration-driven applications.
• Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks, including SOC 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS.
• Experience with Python, React or other complementary development technologies.
• Experience integrating AI services, APIs or agent-based capabilities into production applications, with an understanding of security, data privacy, reliability and operational considerations.
• Experience working with distributed engineering teams and third-party technology partners.
