Senior Backend Engineer

Build backend systems for MapMyFitness apps (MapMyRun, MapMyWalk, MapMyRide) using Python/Java, AWS, and Kubernetes to power fitness tracking for millions of users.
Role Description
Come join the MapMyFitness team at Outside as a Senior Backend Engineer. In this role, you will build software that powers MapMyRun, MapMyWalk, MapMyRide, and our other fitness tracking applications used by millions of athletes worldwide. You will work closely with our team of engineers alongside our peers in growth marketing, product, and design.

- Lead development of backend systems and growth initiatives for the MapMyFitness platform.
- Collaborate with marketing, product, and design peers to ship great user experiences.
- Respond proactively to bugs and make continuous improvements for the MapMyFitness community.
- Assist with monitoring and resolving incidents, ensuring high availability.
Qualifications
- You have 7+ years experience in backend software development.
- You are proficient with AI agent coding; Claude Code.
- You are proficient with Python and Java; experience with Scala is a plus.
- You have strong experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures.
- You are comfortable working with RDS/MySQL and Django.
- You have experience with Kafka or similar messaging/event-driven systems.
- You are a strong communicator in a fully remote environment.
- You can clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- You are able to work independently in situations of ambiguity.
- You have experience shipping maintainable and testable code bases.
- You can build and maintain APIs that power mobile clients.
- You have contributed to major architectural changes on products used by millions of users.
Requirements
- Passion for fitness, running, cycling, or other endurance activities.
- Experience working with legacy systems.
- Familiarity with the MapMyFitness apps or active user community.
