Senior Backend Engineer

Salary: $140,000 - 165,000 per year

• We need 6+ years of experience building and operating production backend services, with strong recent TypeScript/Node expertise.
• We expect solid API design judgment, including decisions around versioning, pagination, and error handling.
• We need working proficiency in Go, or a demonstrated ability to become effective in a new language quickly.
• We look for experience with message-based or event-driven systems, along with an understanding of delivery guarantees and failure modes.
• We want experience across relational and document data models, including schema design and query performance tuning.
• We need comfort with containers and Kubernetes, including reading manifests, troubleshooting pods, and reasoning about resource limits.
• We expect testing to be part of your development process, not an afterthought.
• Nice-to-have experience includes NestJS or another opinionated DI framework, MQTT or similar constrained-device protocols, time-series data at scale, on-prem or edge Kubernetes, React and Next.js, embedded Linux, Buildroot or Yocto, Python tooling, certificate and PKI lifecycle work, or experience in a regulated, safety-adjacent, or field-serviced product domain.

• Design and implement backend services in TypeScript using NestJS.
• Own features from end to end, including the data model, API, tests, and documentation.
• Work on telemetry ingestion from our device fleet and improve reliability when networks or hardware are unstable.
• Write and maintain Go applications running on our embedded Linux devices.
• Model and optimize the data layer across document and time-series databases.
• Package and release our work through container builds, Helm charts, and the CI pipeline into staging.
• Keep the platform observable and diagnosable in production.
• Contribute to the web application when priorities and your interests align.
• Participate in our Scrum process, including two-week sprints, stakeholder demos, and retrospectives.
• Collaborate with engineers across the device, platform, and operator interface layers.

We are building the next generation of our monitoring platform. Our stack includes a TypeScript and NestJS backend running in containers on Kubernetes (RKE2), MongoDB and QuestDB, and an operator-facing web application built with Next.js and React. Our monitoring devices communicate with the platform over MQTT, and the device-side applications run in Go and Python on embedded Linux. This is typically an office-based hybrid remote role in Raleigh, NC, with occasional travel for events, client meetings, or cross-team collaboration. We offer a compensation range of $140,000-$165,000 USD base salary plus incentive compensation, along with 120 hours of PTO, separate paid sick leave, comprehensive benefits, quarterly EBITDA bonus participation, and opportunities for ongoing learning and career growth.
