Senior Backend Engineer (PHP)
Summary
Remote senior backend engineer who designs, builds, and optimizes backend systems in Perl and PHP for Shuru's products and client solutions — building RESTful APIs, automating with CRON jobs, tuning MySQL/PostgreSQL, and keeping production reliable, all during a 6 PM–3 AM IST (US-hours) shift.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Perl / PHP) to join our growing engineering team. You’ll design, build, and optimize backend systems that power Shuru’s products and client solutions. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives in fast-paced environments, takes ownership of complex systems, and is comfortable collaborating with global teams during US working hours.
Shift Timing: 6 PM – 3 AM IST (US Shift)
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems using Perl and PHP.
- Modernize and optimize existing backend components for better performance and maintainability.
- Build and integrate RESTful APIs and automate backend tasks using CRON jobs.
- Collaborate with frontend, DevOps, and product teams to deliver seamless end-to-end solutions.
- Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to long-term technical planning.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following engineering best practices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues promptly, ensuring high availability and reliability.
Requirements
- Fluent English communication skills, both verbal and written.
- 3-6 years of backend development experience in PHP, Node.js, or a similar language.
- Strong experience with Perl (must-have).
- Solid understanding of RESTful APIs and backend automation (CRON jobs).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Experience working with ticketing and project tracking tools such as Linear or JIRA.
- Strong database skills (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and experience in performance optimization.
- Familiarity with Linux environments, Git, and CI/CD workflows.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently during US hours.
