Senior Backend Engineer Ruby AI Engineering Duo Agent Platform Tools

You will take end-to-end ownership of complex backend features for Agentic Tools in the GitLab monolith. You will design, implement, and review REST and GraphQL APIs, improve automated testing, troubleshoot production issues through Tier 2 on-call rotations, and strengthen observability, resiliency, and responsible AI integration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, ship, and maintain secure, well-tested, performant backend features and improvements for Agentic Tools.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver iterative enhancements.
  • Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs and related backend logic.
  • Improve and extend automated testing, including RSpec and other frameworks.
  • Share engineering standards, patterns, and learnings with other engineers.
  • Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and enhance observability and resiliency.
  • Assess the competitive landscape for GitLab's MCP server.

Requirements

  • Experience building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.
  • Ability to work across the stack in a mature codebase.
  • Proficiency designing or extending REST and/or GraphQL APIs with attention to scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility.
  • Experience designing and shipping AI-powered backend features and integrations.
  • Understanding of large language model limitations and responsible production use.
  • Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to identify and address application and infrastructure performance bottlenecks.
  • Ability to collaborate in an async-first, distributed team.
