Senior Backend Engineer - Ruby on Rails
NewBe an early applicantSummary
Senior backend individual contributor on a Ruby on Rails platform that automates proposals, contracts, billing and payments for service-based businesses. Day to day: leading the decomposition of the Rails monolith into services, shaping AWS architecture, building third-party integrations, and hardening data handling.
Salary: Up to $160,000 + Super dependant on Experience
You'll be joining a platform that helps thousands of service based businesses get paid on time, every time, by automating the proposals, contracts, billing and payments that used to eat up their week. It's built on a Ruby on Rails core that has grown alongside the business, and it now needs someone who can help it grow into its next stage.
The Role
This is a senior individual contributor role with ownership of how the platform evolves. As the business scales, parts of the Rails monolith need to become services, carefully and deliberately, without slowing things down or breaking what customers rely on every day.
You'll be trusted to make that call, not just execute someone else's plan.
What You'll Do
-
Lead the decomposition of a production Ruby on Rails monolith into services, sequencing the work so nothing breaks along the way
-
Design and justify AWS architecture decisions across compute, networking, secrets management, queuing, and data stores
-
Build and maintain integrations with external systems the platform connects to, including the ones with patchy documentation
-
Put strong practices around data handling in place, including encryption and access control, as the platform matures
-
Set technical direction and bring the rest of the engineering team
What You'll Bring
-
Ruby on Rails experience
-
A real story about pulling a service out of a monolith that stayed live in production the whole time
-
Strong AWS architecture experience, able to justify infrastructure decisions rather than just deploy into whatever already exists
-
Integration with third party APIs
-
Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, Redis, and Sidekiq, including how async systems fail and what you do about it
Why Apply
-
You'll have real architectural scope at a company still small enough for one engineer to change how things work
-
Vibrant social team, with no egos
-
You'll be working on a platform that thousands of businesses depend on
-
You'll have direct access to senior technical leadership
-
You'll get the backing and stability of an established, profitable business without the bureaucracy of a big one
