Senior Backend Engineer
Summary
Senior Backend Engineer at Teya, a European payments fintech, building and running secure, scalable backend services for merchants. Day to day you own features end-to-end using Java 17+, Spring Boot, Kafka and microservices, while driving CI/CD, code quality and mentoring in a small autonomous London-based (hybrid) team.
In this role you will shape and maintain a critical backend service for Teya’s merchants across Europe. You will work within a small, autonomous team to raise engineering standards and mentor others. You’ll own features end-to-end, from design to deployment, while ensuring scalability, performance and reliability. The position blends hands-on development with collaboration across product, design, data science, security and operations, all in a fast-paced fintech context.

- Design, develop and maintain backend services that are secure, scalable and well-tested
- Own features across the full software delivery lifecycle (scope, design, test, deploy, maintain)
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine requirements and contribute to architecture discussions
- Build tools and integrate systems to improve operational efficiency and scalability
- Drive CI/CD improvements and maintain a smooth development pipeline
- Participate in code reviews and promote high-quality output
- Mentor and support other engineers
- Stay updated on software engineering, payments and fintech trends to identify improvements
- Assist in troubleshooting complex system issues to ensure uninterrupted service
- Promote best practices in code quality, testing, automation and security
- Serve as SME and provide guidance to other teams
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong backend experience with Java 17+ and Spring Boot
- Proven ability to design, build and operate reliable production services
- Experience with system design, scalable architectures, microservices and API development
- Strong understanding of databases, data structures, performance trade-offs and distributed systems
- Practical experience with Kafka and event-driven systems
- Focus on monitoring, observability, testing and operational ownership
- Ability to work autonomously and make sound technical decisions
- Clear communication and ability to influence technical direction
- Collaborative mindset and willingness to mentor others
