Senior Backend Engineer

About the Role

Our client is a specialised New Zealand software company that provides a cloud-based CRM to financial advisers, mortgage brokers and insurance professionals. They are now building AI-powered features into that platform and into new standalone products. They need a senior engineer to make those features reliable, secure and affordable to run in production.

This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct reports. You'll report to the Technical Lead and work closely with the Product Owner. Together you'll turn prototypes into dependable workflows, and you'll build reusable capabilities that both the CRM and the new products can share.

What You'll Be Doing

• Designing and building TypeScript backend services, APIs and integrations for AI-powered workflows and the CRM
• Developing reusable components for workflow execution, data access, tenancy, permissions, auditability, retries, failure recovery and human review
• Turning prototypes into production workflows with clear contracts, controlled execution, traceability and measurable outcomes
• Building the services around AI behaviour, including secure context assembly, tool execution, structured outputs and state management
• Developing and maintaining infrastructure across Cloudflare and AWS, including infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, environments and runbooks
• Setting up observability for requests, workflows, integrations and AI usage so failures, latency and costs are easy to see and act on
• Reviewing AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance and maintainability, and strengthening testing and technical documentation

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering
• Strong TypeScript skills, with experience designing and building APIs and integrations
• Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Cloudflare, including infrastructure as code and deployment pipelines
• Experience applying secure development practices such as least privilege, encryption, secrets management and audit logging
• Experience designing secure data models and integration flows for sensitive information
• Experience with observability, automated testing and clear technical documentation
