Senior Backend Software Engineer

About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the logistics and supply chain industry, is actively seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Software Engineer to join their established technology division in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape . This role is critical for developing and maintaining the robust backend systems that power our client's complex operations. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing server-side applications, databases, and APIs, ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability. This is an in-office position, offering direct collaboration with a dedicated team of engineers and stakeholders in Port Elizabeth .

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy scalable and efficient backend services and APIs.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code using relevant programming languages and frameworks.
• Optimize application performance, database queries, and system architecture for speed and scalability.
• Collaborate with front-end developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions.
• Manage and design database schemas, ensuring data integrity and efficient storage.
• Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and mentor junior engineers.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex backend issues.
• Implement security best practices to protect application data and systems.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and technology selections for backend systems.
• Stay updated with the latest backend development trends and best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
• Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, C#, or Go.
• Experience with backend frameworks like Spring Boot, Django, Express.js, or ASP.NET Core.
• Expertise in relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server) and SQL.
• Solid understanding of API design principles (RESTful, GraphQL).
• Experience with message queuing systems (e.g., RabbitMQ, Kafka) is a plus.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker) is desirable.
• Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git).
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Experience working in the Port Elizabeth area is advantageous.
• Must be available for full-time, in-office work in Port Elizabeth.
