Senior CAD Technician - Substation
To act in a senior technical capacity in producing WSP engineering related project deliverables relating to power system Protection & Control (P&C) for Transmission & Distribution, Renewable (Onshore & Offshore wind/ Solar), US projects.
- Create detailed engineering drawings for Extra High Voltage (EHV) projects, covering both Air Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), ranging from 66kV up to 400kV (with a particular emphasis on 132kV voltages and above)
- Preparation and development of Physical design deliverables such as Single Line Diagrams, Layout plan and section drawings, Erection Key Diagram, Grounding Layout, Lightning Protection Layout, Equipment Grounding philosophy, Cable routing layout, Conduit Layout and details, Cable Trench Layout using AutoCAD 2D software. Added advantage for 3D software knowledge.
- Develop drawings to support detailed engineering, such as Land Utilisation Plan, Elevations, Above and Below Grade Conduit layouts, Grounding layout & it’s connection details, Lighting and Lightning protection with respective details, Bill of Materials.
- Facilitate coordination of design activities across various departments, including Civil/Structural and P&C.
- Assist with preparing drawings and revising existing engineering drawings of basic components from specific sketches or layouts.
- Responsible for adhering to company and client drafting standards and procedures.
- Responsible for adhering to the drafting practices of selected discipline.
- Assist in drafting design and documentation for various projects.
- Coordinate with team members and monitor project schedules, ensuring submissions meet high-quality standards.
- Collaborate with WSP US office on design activities.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members.
- Develop and enhance processes, tools, and potentially implement new technologies into the design process.
- Periodic Quality check to be conducted for other engineers & designers.
- Exhibit ingenuity, foresight, and wise decision-making skills in proactively identifying and resolving challenges.
- Contribute to the progress and growth of departmental tools and workflows aimed at improving the effectiveness of design processes, specification development, and project implementation.
- Engage in training sessions and meetings dedicated to addressing targeted organizational initiatives.
- Possess a Diploma or Degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
- Have a minimum of four years and a maximum of seven years of experience in the field of Substation Transmission & Distribution, Renewable (Onshore & Offshore wind/ Solar), BESS projects.
- Experience on working in Raster image files.
- Preferably familiar with US projects. Experience of working in a lead substation design role on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects (or other US utilities like SSEN, SPEN etc.) in the US will be an added advantage.
- Familiarity with 3D tools (Revit) for Engineering design is desirable.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Mandatory Skills
- Substation Physical/Primary Design, AutoCAD, Revit, Layout Design
- Hold a Diploma degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
- Have a minimum of four years and a maximum of Seven years of experience in the field of Substation Transmission & Distribution, Renewable (Onshore & Offshore wind/ Solar), USA projects.
- Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grids Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to substation protection & control in the UK.
- Membership in a relevant professional Engineering Institution, such as IET, CIGRE, IEC, IEEE, is preferred.
- Possess a strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Experience in Substation Design from 33kV to Onshore wind, Offshore wind, Renewable (solar) and US projects is preferred.
- Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrates diligence, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Highly desirable: Proficiency in AutoCAD Software and AutoCAD 3D/Revit would be an added advantage.
