Senior Campaign Designer
About One Man Studio
We make videogames. We partner with major AAA teams to help translate artistic vision and gameplay direction into shipped games.
The Role
We’re looking for a Campaign Designer to help shape and deliver compelling campaign content for a strategy-focused AAA project. You’ll work closely with Design, Narrative, Art, Code, and Production to build missions, scenarios, progression beats, and player-facing campaign systems that are clear, engaging, and replayable.
This role is for someone with strong strategy game instincts, solid systems thinking, and the ability to drive design work across a multi-disciplinary team.
What You’ll Do
- Design campaign content: Create missions, scenarios, objectives, progression beats, and player choices that support the wider campaign vision.
- Own gameplay flow: Shape pacing, challenge, escalation, onboarding, and replayability across campaign experiences.
- Strategy game design: Apply a strong understanding of strategy games, including player decision-making, economy, territory, faction identity, encounter balance, and long-term progression.
- Cross-discipline leadership: Drive design topics within strike groups, aligning Design, Art, Code, Narrative, and Production around clear goals and deliverables.
- Prototype and iterate: Test ideas quickly, respond to playtest feedback, and refine content until it lands.
- Balance and tuning: Work with systems and gameplay teams to tune difficulty, pacing, rewards, and mission structure.
- Player clarity: Ensure objectives, rules, feedback, and consequences are easy to understand without flattening strategic depth.
- Innovation: Bring fresh ideas to campaign structure, mission design, player choice, and strategic progression while staying grounded in production realities.
- Documentation: Write clear briefs, specs, flows, and implementation notes that other disciplines can actually use.
Requirements
- 5+ years in game design, with experience designing campaign, mission, scenario, or progression content.
- Strong background in strategy games as a designer, not just as a player.
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams and helping drive design decisions across strike groups, feature teams, or similar structures.
- Strong understanding of pacing, balance, player motivation, onboarding, and strategic decision-making.
- Comfortable taking ownership of features from concept through implementation and iteration.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
- Able to absorb feedback, defend good design choices, and change course when the data or playtests say you should.
- Reliable in a remote, multi-time-zone production environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience on AAA strategy, tactics, 4X, grand strategy, RTS, or large-scale campaign-driven games.
- Familiarity with live balancing, telemetry, player behavior analysis, or long-tail progression systems.
- Scripting experience for missions, events, AI behaviors, or campaign logic.
- Experience working with proprietary tools or custom editors.
- Strong interest in history, geopolitics, military structure, economy, or faction design.
Portfolio / Work Samples
Show examples of campaign, mission, or systems design work: briefs, diagrams, mission flows, progression maps, encounter breakdowns, tuning notes, or shipped gameplay examples. We want to understand how you think, how you structure content, and how your ideas survive production.
What Success Looks Like
- Campaign content is clear, engaging, and strategically meaningful.
- Strike groups move faster because design goals, constraints, and decisions are well defined.
- Missions and campaign systems improve through iteration, not guesswork.
- The player has interesting choices, understandable goals, and strong reasons to keep playing.
