Senior Consultant - Data Engineering

Salary: Competitive

THE ROLE

Our client is a Brisbane-based digital and business transformation consultancy delivering data and analytics solutions across a diverse range of industries. They have an immediate opening for a Senior Consultant, Data Engineering — a hands-on, client-facing role where you'll own technical delivery across multiple engagements and help customers build data platforms they can genuinely run their business on. If you're equally comfortable writing a pipeline in the morning and explaining its commercial value to a customer in the afternoon, this role was built for you.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design, build and operate data pipelines and lakehouse architectures across Azure and Databricks
• Transform complex, messy source data into well-structured models and Power BI reporting that stakeholders trust
• Own technical design decisions on your engagements — and be prepared to defend them with customers and colleagues
• Run discovery sessions with clients, translating ambiguous business questions into data solutions that answer them
• Embed data quality, testing and governance practices from day one across every engagement
• Partner with directors on pre-sales activity — shaping solutions, sizing effort, and communicating the technical story in language customers can act on
• Mentor engineers around you and contribute to the standards and practices the broader team relies on
• Manage two to three concurrent engagements, balancing hands-on delivery with architecture, mentoring and pre-sales responsibilities

REQUIRED SKILLS

• 5+ years in data engineering, including meaningful time in consulting or professional services with direct client exposure
• Strong SQL and Python, with the judgement to choose the right solution over the impressive one
• Hands-on experience across the Azure data stack — Data Factory, Synapse, Microsoft Fabric and ADLS
• Real-world Databricks and Spark experience, including Delta Lake and layered lakehouse architectures
• Solid data modelling capability across dimensional and lakehouse patterns, with the ability to explain design decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
• Power BI experience that goes beyond dashboards — semantic modelling, DAX and considered report design
• Comfort with source control, CI/CD and environment management, ideally using Azure DevOps
• A demonstrable track record of pre-sales involvement — shaping proposals, sizing engagements and presenting the technical case to clients

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

• Relevant certifications such as DP-203, DP-600 or a Databricks credential
• Experience with dbt in a professional delivery context
• Exposure to AI/ML workloads on data platforms
• Experience delivering into government or other regulated environments
