Senior Controls Engineer

SUMMARY: Senior Controls Engineer develop or redesign electrical controls for new or existing company products. Individuals in this position work from order requirements or other specifications and arrive at final control circuitry and program logic utilizing software and engineering calculations as required. Senior Controls Engineers work independently, provide expertise to less experienced engineering personnel, and may lead a team of Controls Engineers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design electrical controls/control systems for company products
- Write PLC, HMI, PC, and other control programs using various software
- Create Sequence of Operations, control schematics, and control panel layout drawings using CAD software for customer proposals and project requirements
- Create bills of material and routings for use in cost estimates and manufacturing
- Create owner’s manuals, test procedures, and other engineering deliverables as required
- Perform electrical computations for sizing electrical components
- Provide technical support to shop personnel during manufacturing
- Provide field support of company products as required
- Perform the Lead Engineer role for assigned sales orders, including customer interaction, vendor communication, and project management as required
- Serve as Lead Engineer for assigned projects, including customer interaction and vendor communication
- Manage assigned projects to ensure schedule, quality, and budget objectives are achieved
- Lead cross-functional engineering and design teams on large or complex projects
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to product design, engineering processes, and manufacturing efficiency
- Perform other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- May directly supervise Controls Engineers
- Provide leadership and mentorship to engineering personnel
- Guide cross-functional teams through portions of the product development and project execution process
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70, National Electric Code, and NFPA 79, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, both in person and remotely
- Proficient in electrical schematic design using CAD software
- Ability to work independently, collaborate cross-functionally, and lead technical projects
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and mentorship as is required to perform Senior Controls Engineer role
- Proficient in PLC programming using Rockwell Studio 5000 / Logix Designer or equivalent
- Proficiency in HMI development using FactoryTalk View Studio or equivalent
- Strong collaboration skills with Engineering, Sales, and Manufacturing/Production to support customer requirements
- Ability to perform fundamental engineering calculations using software or manual methods
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required, with a minimum of 10 years of related engineering experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Proficient in algebra and geometry as is required to solve engineering problems.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
- Competence with 2D/3D CAD software, SolidWorks is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit. Employee spends some time on shop floor. Most of the time will be spent sitting at a computer workstation and using a telephone.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment is a pleasant, temperature controlled, professional office environment in a manufacturing setting. Personal workstation maybe located on 2nd floor. The employee works in the office but does have frequent interaction with personnel on the shop floor. The employee may also be required to travel occasionally to work in customers’ plants reviewing new applications or on the installation, start-up and commissioning of company products. In plants, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is mixed but does not require hearing protection in most areas.
