Job description

The job holder will use data to make a real difference to decision-making across the agency. You’ll lead the delivery of trusted analytical products and curated datasets, translating complex information into clear and compelling insight.

Working collaboratively with senior leaders and specialists, you’ll shape analytical priorities, ensure outputs are underpinned by robust data and business logic, and help colleagues confidently understand and act on the insights you provide.

Your key responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Deliver high-value strategic analytical products that directly support senior decision-making, ensuring dashboards, insights and metrics are accurate, trusted and aligned to organisational priorities.
  • Work in partnership with Business Analysts to refine analytical requirements, translate business needs into clear analytical specifications, and ensure analytical products are designed around measurable business value.
  • Design and implement robust analytical logic, including Materialised Views, Genie Spaces and other analytical data structures, ensuring consistent definitions, reliable calculations and well-structured data that supports high-quality analysis.
  • Act as a specialist in analytical methods and visualisation, providing expert guidance in Power BI and other analytical tools, and supporting colleagues to develop clear, compelling insight that informs action.
  • Lead analytical quality assurance aligned with the Government’s Aqua Book, validating data, methods and outputs to ensure analytical products are robust, trustworthy and decision-ready.
  • Work closely with Senior Business Analysts and the Heads of Data Insights and Analytics, Data Engineering, Data Science and Data Governance to align analytical requirements, inform the evolution of analytical datasets and data products from an analytical perspective, and ensure analytical products are built on reliable, well-understood and analytically ready data foundations.
  • Work iteratively using Agile delivery practices, contributing to planning, prioritisation and continuous refinement of analytical products, and supporting incremental delivery of insight in line with user needs.
  • Support the adoption and effective use of analytical products by senior leaders and teams, communicating insights clearly, shaping analytical narratives, and helping stakeholders understand, trust and act on analytical outputs.
  • Provide technical leadership within the Data Insights & Analytics team, supporting the development of others through mentoring and, where required, line management, and continuously improving analytical standards, capability and ways of working.

Great line management is important to us as an organisation, and we will equip and support line managers to develop the skills set out in the Civil Service Line Management Standards.

Pre-employment Checking

If your application is successful but you have been dismissed from the Civil Service, your application could be removed at the pre-employment checking stage depending on the nature of the dismissal.

Applicants who are successful at interview will be, as part of pre-employment screening, subject to a check on the Internal Fraud Database (IFD). This check will provide information about employees who have been dismissed for fraud or dishonesty offences. This check also applies to employees who resign or otherwise leave before being dismissed for fraud or dishonesty had their employment continued. Any applicant’s details held on the IFD will be refused employment. A candidate is not eligible to apply for a role within the Civil Service if the application is made within a 5-year period following a dismissal for carrying out internal fraud against government.

All external applicants and current employees of accredited non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) will be required to undergo a Social Media Check. A Social Media Check is a review of your publicly available online activity, typically across platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and others. The purpose is to identify any public posts or content that could raise concerns for employers, such as:

  • Hate speech or discriminatory behaviour
  • Threats or acts of violence
  • Illegal activity or substance misuse
  • Sexually explicit material
  • Extremist views or affiliations

Importantly, this check does not involve hacking into your accounts or accessing private messages. It only considers content you have chosen to make public. Employers use this kind of screening to help ensure their workplace remains safe, inclusive, and aligned with company values. It’s not about judging your personality or lifestyle - it’s about checking for potential red flags that might affect the role or company culture. If you have questions or concerns about the social media check, we would be happy to explain in more detail what’s being looked at and how your data is handled securely and fairly.
