Abbott Established Pharmaceutical Division (EPD) is looking for a Senior Data Engineer for its global Pharma Division Headquarters based in Allschwil, Basel.
The AA team is on a mission to reshape the entire EPD division around data-driven decision‑making.
The Senior Data Engineer collaborates closely with our Data Science team and our product delivery team to ensure that the innovative applications we deploy are built on robust data infrastructures and are fed with quality data. These solutions directly transform the way we produce, market and sell our products around the world.
This role focuses on designing a cloud architecture that carefully balances cost and performance, while creating reusable solutions that load and publish quality data across many of the different data sources we use in the division.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Build, maintain, and optimize end-to-end data pipelines that acquire, ingest, and process data from multiple sources into data lakes and enterprise data warehouses.
- Implement monitoring and alerting systems, testing frameworks ensuring observability and quality of published data.
- Design and manage data environments in the cloud with emphasis on AWS, focusing on reusability, performance, data quality, and security.
- Plan project-specific data engineering architecture in collaboration with affiliates across manufacturing sites and development partners, setting the standard of quality of solutions owned by the team.
- Implement DevOps best practices (CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, containerization) to automate deployment, testing, and monitoring of data pipelines and infrastructure.
- Work closely with data scientists, engineers, analysts, and IT to drive our mission to empower data-driven decision making in core strategic processes.
- Ensure compliance with data security and privacy standards in close collaboration with enterprise data security standards and tooling.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior data engineers, fostering a collaborative environment that bridges business requirements and technical execution.
- Stay updated with emerging data technologies and methodologies, integrating innovative practices into the company’s AA initiatives within EPD.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science, electrical engineering, etc.
- 5–8 years of relevant working experience in data engineering within corporate environments; exposure to regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals is a plus.
- Strong Python and SQL skills; Java or Scala a plus.
- Extensive experience with technologies including AWS (EMR, Glue, Athena, RDS, Step Functions, S3), Spark, Hadoop, Airflow, dbt, Terraform, Docker, Git, and both SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Proven experience designing enterprise ETL platforms with emphasis on observability.
- Demonstrated ability to guide junior developers and third‑party contractors.
- Proven communication skills; fluency in English is a must.
